Help, This is for a friend’s car That I am working on, the symptoms started with a check engine light about 2 weeks ago, 4 days later he found he was drive to work and back (45 minutes on I-95) with no engine oil in the car we filled it with engine oil and ran it for 10 minutes luckily the engine did not show any ill side effects… now it is sluggish on idle and during initial acceleration, but after he gets the car above 50 MPH it smooths out and drives fine. he also has a gear sticking problem in the automatic transmission, but we are looking for a used replacement as I type. hope somebody can help us.

First things first, check the codes.

Then assess the engine’s mechanical health to determine if the engine requires replacement. Simply tests like a compression test should help you figure out if the engine was damaged.

          With the transmission –
Do not bother buying a used one unless you know it is good. Just getting one out of a junkyard car is not the answer.
The reason is because a bad transmission is often what lands a car in the junkyard to begin with, with the exception being cars that were wrecked and totaled out.

Are you sure the sluggishness isn’t the trans acting up?
