      I am disabled an use a mobility scooter to travel long distance. However, the car is so small there is no way my scooter fits. I frequently go to Salt Lake City from Logan, UT. Here is my question could i get a hitch and purchase a small Harbor Freight trailer and tow it behind the Subaru without damaging the car?

        Go to google and type in towing package for your vehicle, you will find some websites that sells them. They actually make special scooter racks that mounts into towing packages on the rear that you can just lower and drive the scooter on and off. That way you wouldn’t have to worry about maneuvering a trailer.

          My concern with that method is my rear suspension.

            Sorry I didn’t think about that. With as light of a car like that it would add a lot of leverage on the rear of it. I’ve been looking around online to see what kind of towing capacity that car is but I can’t find a definite answer. I’ve seen 500-1500 lbs. The trick to a trailer is having one set up that the weight balanced well over the trailer axle, decreasing the tongue weight and the strain on the suspension. Have you seen anything in the owners manual for any towing capacity? If not it wouldn’t hurt to call up a Subaru dealership and ask them.

                First off look into the towing package for your car if your having an issue with you can always go to uhaul and get one installed. Also a trailer can be a bit cumbersome have you thought of a Cargo carrier with a ramp? Something like this? http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Hitches/Rage_PowerSports/SC-500_small.jpg

                  I have a Imprezza with a hitch I use to pull a sailboat – 380 ibs. plus weight of trailer.

                  I found it was more work hooking up the lights than installing the hitch. You need a convertor box to make the lights work – not expensive. I think I have approx $300 in the entire project of making the car ready to tow.

                      BTW, the reason I needed a convertor box for the wiring is because the car has separate bulbs for stop and turn and the trailer uses a double filament bulb for same. If you would need a convertor box or not would depend on the trailer lights.

                        You should have a sticker on the drivers door that lists the GAWR this is the gross axle weight front and rear. It is this number, which is you, any passengers, all your stuff, and the tongue weight of the trailer. This is what the cars suspension is designed to carry, it doesn’t go into power to climb a grade or braking. My guess is you have sufficient capacity to tow what you are talking about. The trailer’s axle will support 90 percent of the towed weight. This is a big plus over hanging the entire weight of the scooter off the back of your car. My thinking is that a car and trailer would drive better than a car with weight hung off the back. You really want sufficient tongue weight to keep the trailer from swaying. I’m sure there are good hitches for your car

                        The dirty little secret is that GAWR is more accurate than any towing spec from the manufacturer. Maybe talk to a reputable trailer dealer.

                        I have three trailers; a 29′ airstream that tows like a dream; a boat that tows like a pig; and a new 5×8 utility trailer I got to replace my pickup which has enough tongue weight to tow pretty well. Remember that backing a small trailer takes some practice.
