      Since the 2.4 is an interference engine, would a cylinder leak down be the best way to diagnose bent valves? I’m kinda iffy about cranking the motor with the belt being broken haha.

        Whenever I’m confronted with a situation like that the first thing I do is replace the belt and put everything back in time. Once I’ve done that I try and start the engine. Don’t worry you can’t damage it more if it’s already damaged. If it starts you win, if not or you have a miss then you know you need to remove the cylinder head next. No matter what you would have had to replace the timing belt so that’s really not a loss in my opinion. You can’t do a proper leak down if the belt is broken and the engine is out of time anyway.

          What he said – fix the belt and run a engine compression test/leak down test. If it shows broken valves, then you have to decide if you want to spend the money to take out the head and service it from the machine shop (or find a replacement head)

          In my experience, if you are looking for a perfect fix, replacing whole engine usually comes out cheaper than trying to fix busted cylinder head. The key word is perfect – even if you fix the bent valves problem, engine with high miles on the rings will cause blowby and burn oil.

            Thanks guys! Yeah, most likely has bent valves. My friend took it into a shop because I don’t have time to work on it between school and other side jobs, unfortunately. I told her to let me know what options they give her, but I did let her know about the motor. I was trying to convince her into swapping a 4G63, but that’s a headache in itself and I was joking. Would’ve been cool if she was down to do it, though! Thanks again Eric and Skim!

                  Junkyard heads for the 4g64 in the Galant are not that expensive. JIS Auto in Arlington Texas has some fairly cheap full gasket kits for most Japanese cars. Their best prices are on ebay. Just mentioning it because if you pull the head you’ll have whole mess of gaskets to replace.

                    Thanks for the input everyone! The tensioner had gone out so the belt skipped a few teeth lol. Glad it didn’t snap. It’s now back on the road.
