My friend has a 2000 Odyssey EX with 220K miles. The van just started misfiring yesterday with no prior problems. I scanned it and it has several misfire codes for various cylinders. There is also an EGR error but he’s been driving with that for some time now. From the idle sound It sounds like at least one cylinder is not firing. My guess is that a coil pack has blown. Does this sound right? I have diagnosed Honda ignition systems before but only 4 cylinders that have a single coil/distributor. In your guys opinion where should I start. I have several tools at my disposal including a power probe. What is the easiest way to diagnose this. Thank you in advance. I appreciate everyone taking there time to answer this.

Watch Eric’s video on cleaning the EGR port on the Acura. It is very similar to the Odyssey. See if that clears up the random misfires. If not, then I would check the condition of the spark plugs/ignition system, probably have a bad coil pack as well. There are various ways to test to find the offending cylinder with a balance test or spark plug tester. Once you find the offending cylinder(s), you need to verify with a good spark plug to verify whether its the plug or the coil. You might also want to verify the wires as well but I think it will be a coil pack. Thats where I would start.

I would start with the power balance test.given the age and mileage of the vehicle you may want to replace plugs, wires and coil packs. first diagnose
what’s wrong before any parts are changed.as for the egr valve. if you have a vacuum gage you can operate the diaphragm.once again due to the age
and mileage would remove it to check and clean the passages good luck and keep us posted.

+1 with the power balance test. Here is a video Eric made which should help if you dont have a bi-directional scan tool –

The forum is on it today, start with the power balance test in the video and that should help you find a bad coil if you have one, the engine in the video is practically the same as the one in that van so it should be pretty straightforward.

I just wanted to thank you all for your time and your responses. I did a power balance test and ruled out a bad coil on cylinder #3. I replaced it and now running as it was before. Thanks again.

So how would you perform this test on a 99 Corolla? The wires on the coil pack has plastic clips on each wire and very close together. It’s difficult to unplug when the engine is running. I don’t want to get zap when unplugging the cable from the pack.
                      Thanks.

You can also unplug the injectors one at a time to accomplish the same thing.
