Hello all. Hope everyone had a great Christmas. I just purchased a 2001 Civic Coupe with the 1.7 and 66,000 miles from someone who had it sitting in their garage for five or so years. I flushed the coolant, changed the oil and replaced the battery. After that, I tried to see if she would start. I got a good solid crank but no fuel or spark. The dash light that looks like a green key is continuously flashing (immobilizer). I have a pretty decent OBD tool with Asian upgrade but obviously no good enough to access the immobilizer. Are there any other ways to ‘learn’ the key besides towing it to the dealer? Thanks, Aaron

If you have a congenial Honda dealer, you can give them the VIN number and show them some proof of ownership, and they might give you the secret 5-digit code to start the car. It’s a pain to enter the code, as you have to do it a bit at a time using the parking brake and ignition switch.

If you plan to use the car, why not get a real key made at the dealership? They will need the VIN and proof of ownership to make a key.

BTW if the car has been sitting for 5 years, you may need to empty and clean out the gas tank and fuel lines and replace the fuel filter. There may be other things clogged up and rusted stuck, like the brake calipers, brake shoes, AC compressor, even the cylinder walls. Basically anything that isn’t tightly sealed up and expects to get lubricated from moving and sloshing oil or fluids, those things can get rusted up. Depending on the humidity there, you might have QUITE a job ahead of you.

No fuel or spark? We’re the injectors firing? That’s a long time for gas to sit in a tank expecially if it wasn’t sitting full. I’d clean it before moving crud through the system and damaging otherwise potentially good components. The no spark condition isn’t difficult given a systematic approach, fuel that’s been sitting since 2008/2009 is different and needs to be flushed and cleaned. The tank may need to be replaced along with pump, filter etc….All the way to the injectors.

Thanks for the info. I called the dealer to see what they would charge to reprogram the key. Including my tow, it will be over $200.00. I have been looking for an excuse to get a new scanner… The one I am using now only goes to 2008. I called my Snap On guy and he is bringing me a new one. Luckily, the car came in with no gas and I put a few fresh gallons in and will hope that I will not have to fool around with any fuel issues. I am quite positive I will be changing all brakes, belts, etc. Just need to get it running so I can find out what other things need to be replaced. Not to mention the body work and full paint job that is needed! Thanks, Aaron

Lol! I love excuses to “need” more tools! I wish you the best.

Snap On does not have a scanner that can access the immobilizer for a 2001 Civic… bummer. That would have been the easiest sale he ever had. I was all excited about getting a new tool (even if it would have cost me $2,800!) Just went on Craigslist and got a guy on his way to program it for me. Thanks, Aaron

check that your battery voltage is good along with the connections.
Check that you are using an original key. Do you have another original
                  key to try?

Thanks for all of the help… It is really appreciated! The locksmith just left. He programmed the key. Fifteen minutes and $75.00 later and I have a smooth running car! Looks like no fuel issues (yet). Just finishing up the brakes and then I will take her for a test drive. Hope the trans has no issues! Wish me luck and thanks again for all of the helpful and rapid replies to my problem! Aaron

If you can get to the emobilizer , you could probably jump it which is only two wires (one going to the ignition and the other one going either to ecu or fuse box)

Not a problem. Glad you got it sorted out. 🙂
