Fairly easy. it should be 36 mm. the nut can sometimes be rather tight. don’t loosen the serp belt until the nut is loose. fyi- a 36mm open end wrench works as well as the ” special ” fan cluth wrench. is the fan clutch bad or are you doing a water pump ?

My fan clutch is bad. My truck will run hot if I don’t have air movement. I’m replacing with electric fans. I’m just not sure if I can take off the fan clutch by myself.

I would just replace the factory fan clutch.
no sense in reinventing the wheel. I’ve also
heard of alot cooling problems happening changing
to electric fans. your call. heres some procedure help.

Here’s a video by Briansmobile showing how he uses a homemade tool and a hammer on a Dakota with a 318. Would think they were about the same. Can also use an air hammer if you have access.

I did mine with a big adjustable wrench and a baby sledge hammer. Took a few blows to loose it up but eventually came out.

i use a flat piece of steel with a bolt threw one end to hold the pulley. then just a wrench on the nut. on the pulley there are them 4 holes like you see in the video posted above that is where the little bolt pokes into then it just hangs up agensed the nut. pretty simple home made tool. i used one of the garage door locks for the piece of flat steel haha. no need to hammer or bend stuff.

I too use the hammer method and it works just fine. You’ll have to put a nut or something on there if you remove the fan however because I believe it holds the water pump pulley on.
