Hi all, I’m new to the forum here so I’ll start by introducing myself. I’m Dan, and I drive a 2002 Grand Prix GTP. I bought it almost 2 years ago for just under $2,000. All I know about the previous owner was that he used to race the car and made modifications to reflect his use of the car. For example there’s no catalytic converter, there’s also an after market K&N high performance racing air filter.

Since then I’ve had 3 out of 4 tie rod ends replaced. New brakes front and back. New wheel bearings in the front and most recently replaced all 3 coil packs. I’d say in total nearly $3000 in repairs. I’ve been having some transmission issues lately and figure I need a new-used or rebuilt one. I also need new exhaust front to back.

My question is should I bother doing the transmission or should I just drive it till it dies and start over with another used car? I love this car, it has everything I want in a car and then some, but is it a lost cause? Am I crazy for wanting to keep this car?

Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Me personally I wouldn’t bother putting more money into this car. If the previous owner raced it you are going to be continually fixing it because every component you haven’t replaced yet has been stressed. Sometimes it’s easy to get “underwater” (spending more money than it is worth) on a car because once you spend big money on something like a transmission you figure to get any worth out of the repairs you made you should just keep doing more and more to keep it on the road.

On the other hand, if you plan to keep the car for many, many more years (10? 20?) because you either a) love it so much you’ll give the woman the house but to hell if she’s ever taking my prized possession, or b) you’re just not really very fond of making car payments, well then, keep spending the money and try to keep it going down the road.

You’ve made some good points, which I shall use in my decision.
