      Hello,

I had a “Check VSC” and “ABS” warning light a while ago. I pulled the code and got a “C0205” code which translates as “Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor”.

I ordered a new OEM hub and sensor assembly from Lexus but never got time to change it out. After a while, the message went away but a new one came back – “C0200” – which translates as “Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor”.

I checked the part number with Toyota and it seems as though the left and right front wheel speed sensors use the same part, so I decided to use the part that I ordered (for the left sensor) to replace the right.

Right after I had installed the new part (nightmare due to the hub seizing to the knuckle), I got the same C0200 code with an additional C1223 “ABS Current Malfunction in ABS control system”.

What I am wondering is whether these sensors are directional somehow and that the computer thinks the right front wheel is going backwards. I heard someone did something similar, but not for this vehicle. If it is directional, is there a way to reverse the direction electronically?

I’d like to be reasonably sure somehow before I order another hub and sensor assembly costing $300-$400 dollars and repeat the installation another 2 times.

        The sensor are not directional.

Your C1223 may be related to a recent dead battery. There is also no real reason why you wouldn’t coincidentally have the other ABS sensor fail shortly after the first one did.

You should check over your ABS unit and wiring to it, mostly for corrosion, but possibly also pinching or chafing damage to wiring (maybe a fender bender or recent work in the engine bay affected a wiring harness). Pull the connector off and look at the pins/sockets for corrosion or deformation.

I think I need to check out the wiring in more detail. I noticed there was some corrosion on the terminal but I cleaned it out with electrical contact cleaner. Maybe something else is there – break in the wiring or the connector itself is damaged. What’s the best way to troubleshoot the cable? Measure the resistance across the terminals?

A resistance test is not the best way to test a wire, but a ABS sensor is does not lend itself to any better form of testing and you are kind of stuck with a resistance measurement. If it measures within spec and the physical condition of the sensor and wiring looks good, chances are high that it’s a still a working part. Still can never be sure though on a part like that where it’s a sealed unit with integrated wiring. It just can’t be inspected normally.

Something to also be considered is the reluctor ring on the outer CV joint. I’ve seen some aftermarket axles have issues with this. I’ve also seen damaged rings cause issues with the ABS. I’m not saying that’s your problem, but I think it’s worth checking at least.

Good luck and keep us posted.
