      Hello all,

I have a 2004 Malibu – base model, that makes the dreaded pop/clunk when steering. After reading several sources on the internet, a TSB suggested to lube the intermediate steering shaft and U-joints with white lithium grease. I did that, but I was unable to remove this plastic squishy cup that covers the steering shaft-firewall passthrough.

Any ideas as to how I can remove this cup, so that I can spray grease on the shaft inside of it? (the white stuff is the grease that I have already sprayed)

You may not need to. You may be able to access that from under the vehicle as that section likely goes into the PS rack itself. To be honest I’m not sure if this will solve your problem, I could see it perhaps solving a ‘creak’ or ‘groan’ but not a ‘clunk’. To me that sounds like loose parts and it’s not likely that lubrication will solve that problem.
