      2008 Corolla 5 speed with 34,000 miles..

The transmission shifts perfectly in every gear unless your merging onto the highway in 3rd gear and you shift from 3rd to 4th above ~3500 rpm. When you shift above that rpm you can feel a gear clash if you shift it at a normal speed.. however if you shift it slower it will not happen. Also its only upshifting to 4th.. i can downshift into 4th at any speed/rpm and no gear clash.

Anyone have some insight on why this is happening? Especially on such a low mileage transmission? I know a lot of transmissions are 1:1 (input to output shaft) so that makes it especially confusing to me why im getting a gear clash on a possible ‘direct drive’ ratio, but i know every transmission is different. I’m guessing its a worn synchronizer, but transmissions were never my strong suit. Also found a few youtube videos of 10th generation (09+) having this issue, but they all had 150k+ miles.

Any tranny gurus out there that have seen this before and might be able to shed some light on the situation?

Direct 1 1 to gears have synchros too. In modern transmissions all forward gears have synchros. Is this a car that somebody is always putting their hand on the shifter, say as a resting place. If a person does that, and applies much pressure on the shifter, it can, possibly, but not as likely damage synchros, forks and or the teeth on the ends of the gears. With low mileage like that, I would have to attribute it some thing else though. Usually when a car is really hotrodded hard, 1st to 2 second synchros are the ones that get wasted, although so much of that depends on how the car is driven. If this car has been driven and shifted with the clutch not fully pushed down, it could cause problems as well. Why those gears though is anybodys guess unless that model of Toyota has a specific issue.
