While looking for Speaker adapters for potencial Speaker Upgrade in my Aveo… I was looking for a coverter adaptor that would allow me to mount 6x9s in a 6.5″ hole. One link led me to a Nissan forum of someone asking how to do this exact thing on a Maxima. Other users responded by saying this is a pointless thing to do because “Sound is Round” Not Oval and putting in 6x9s would actually make sound quality worse. Do you really get better sound from Round Speakers?

Also the Doors take 4″ speakers. There is a MDF spacer i can buy that will allow me to install 6.5s in the doors. Is it worth doing?

If the speakers are good quality, then they should perform just as well within their operating limits. Most of the arguments against the oval speakers seem to be either based on bogus science or only hold true with a combination of ridiculous power levels and careful measurement.

The 6×9 speakers will have different characteristics than the ones they are replacing, so you may need to tweak the equalizer a bit. Same thing when replacing 4 inch with 6.5 inch. The larger speakers will give you better bass and lower mid-range, but you’ll loose some high end if they aren’t properly designed two way.

Be sure to get the polarity correct because that would really make things sound weird if a speaker or two were 180 degrees out of phase from the others 😛 🙂

I agree with the above. If your a real sound buff and looking for the best of the best crisp sounds quality then going and seeing a professional car audio installer may shed some better light on things and be able to recommend a great setup. I persoanlly cant tell the differnce between round and 6*9 speakers because i dont have the ear for it. However $20 compaired to $150 speakers will definatly produce cleaner sound. Also if your headunit is a basic factory unit then it may not be able to operate the speakers to their full potential. Agains a car audio specialist could clear this up nicely for you.

            1. elliptics will give you better low range.
            2. NOTHING will give you a good sound with factory head unit or even good aftermarket HU, UNLESS you have twitters and decent sub in the trunk, that coming with an amp. SOMETHING has to make those drivers WORK.
            3. At least, get a decent 4 channel amp for the doors, but still – no sub in the trunk – no good sound. Unless you have factory BOSE system with good sub and amp already.

I have 6x9s in my accord. My friends think I have subwoofers, and I bought the cheap ones. If that isn’t enough proof for you I don’t know what is.

PS I did upgrade my head unit as well, and I upgraded the door panel speakers. All in all, the two 6x9s pump out most of the bass, and it sounds really good at a reasonable volume. No, it’s not going to shake the windows on the houses as you drive by. If you need that much power then you have issues beyond what size speakers you should be putting in an Aveo.

i have found that a 6×9 has more bass note than its round speaker friends, why is that? well i think because it has more surface area in which to move air, kickers old montra with the L5/7 the big squares, was more area in our speakers means more bass in your ride. well ive found that to be true with everything but their subs. lol 6×9 is a good speaker, and you can usually pick up a good set cheaper than their round counterparts. i love some 6x9s i keep a set in stand alone boxes for when i dont have a factory place for them, you can usually find a place to stick a box.

More companies invest in 6.5 speakers than 6×9’s. The theory is that the 6×9 moves more air but in all honestly I can’t tell the difference. As long as the speakers are mounted properly they should sound fine. Why go through the trouble of putting a speaker that wasn’t meant to fit. As long as it has a decent magnet and proper power (most common problem I find is that people don’t power interior speakers properly)

A good 6.5″ speaker will reproduce good low frequencies just as well as a 6×9 IF it is supplied with enough power. It’s all about control, and controlling the cone of a speaker is very dependent on having enough power — not for loudness, but for accuracy. Too many Head Units fall short of having enough power to do this on their own. That said, be very aware that some 6.5″ speakers do not measure the same as others. Some have a diameter of 160mm, some 165mm and some even a bit more (6.75″). You may need an adapter staying with 6.5″ sized speakers as well. Also, check for speaker depth, especially when mounting in doors … take into account all adaptors and give yourself some excess for errors in measurement from the manufacturers. And one last thing … for the best bass, make sure you properly seal up surfaces between speaker frames and adaptors (if used) to prevent any sound from the back of the cone interfering with the listening space … it diminishes bass. A good material is foam stripping found at most hardware stores. Good luck.

Depends if you want to run speakers through 4 channel amp. And seperate amp and sub in boot. It will be best. I have same setup. And believe, I can shake windows of my neighbours with bass, too loud and no distortion, and clear sound.
In my other car. Only sub with amp and 4 6.75″ speakers with kenwood stereo. Sounds good clear loud, but only upto a limit.
Depends how much you want to spend and how you want to do. Start from head unit..
Factory of aftermarket. Then choose if you want to install amp or not, if no go for perfect size speakers (don’t need to install bigger speakers if there is room for small ones)
I have Rockford Fosgate R1675. They will perfectly work with aftermarket head unit. As they need only 5-40rms and 91db sensitive.
If you want to install amp. Go for higher RMS. let’s say 50-100rms.
I don’t think bigger speaker will make any difference they just need good constant power to run properly.

I would say 6.5 are better because 6 by 9 speakers are usually 2 or 3 way with the built in tweeters but 6.5 speakers are available in component, which is separate speaker and tweeter, which sounds way better. Go with the 6 .5 i would say
