Thanks for quick reply! Already reset TCM, will test for codes next and so on… ill be back to let u know.
September 26, 2011 at 11:00 am #440327I’ve seen this problem more times than I can count and it’s usualy the PRNDL switch in the console. I will remove them and clean the contacts with contact cleaner and when I reinstall them I reposition them slightly so that they come to rest in a different position when placed in park. Turn the key to the ON position when you reinstall the switch and just snug the screws down, while watching the indicator on the dash for “P” move the switch till you see it light up, when it does tighten down the switch and recheck for the problem. Many techs just replace the switch but I’ve done this on many vehicles with no comebacks. P.S. make sure you get the peg that comes out of the shifter to fit into the slot on the switch or you will have to remove the switch and start over.
September 26, 2011 at 11:00 am #4403251. Jump the 2-cavity connector in the right kick panel area and see if the “S” light will flash any codes. The wire colors in the connector are Orange/Red (ORN/RED) and Green/White (GRN/WHT).
2. If there are no codes, unplug a transmission solenoid and see if it will set a code. If it does not, try removing the battery cable and resetting the memory of the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
3. Next, check the powers and ground to the TCM, and if those are OK, open the covers on the control unit and look for a burnt circuit board. If the circuit board is burnt, verify the resistance of the TCM solenoids.
Check the key switch and brake switch input. See if the park nuetral input to the control unit is good. Energize the wire that controls the shift lock solenoid to make sure it will operate.September 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #440328Eric thanks again that worked(last time was the fuel pump relay put a nice bead of solder and flux on there and worked great. tx!!). Took the switch out and was full of gunk, about 20 years of dust mixed with grease. Didn’t have any contact cleaner so i used high proof rubbing alcohol, scuffed the metal a little bit, worked like a charm shifter unlocks and brake lamp is gone. So i tried pulling codes, no codes. i unhooked the upper tranny selonode and got a faint flash(about half second maybe less) followed by a more solid half second flash. When i drive with the sport shit on it seems to shift fine, but when off 2nd gear doesn’t want to shift till almost 3 1/2 rpm i have to let off the gas to shift if not. Should i take out the tcm and test it??
September 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #440329You might not have it aligned just right, make sure you line it up when it’s in park because the electronics need to match up with the mechanical linkage that puts the trans in gear. It’s also not a bad idea to check the fluid level and condition. Remember to check the fluid with the engine off and hot and don’t use anything but Honda fluid if you need to change it or top it off.
September 29, 2011 at 11:00 am #440330Ya must not of aligned it just right started slowly not releasing the break again and break light came on. Gunna go grab some honda tranny fluid, drain check the cond and top off cant hurt been 30k since i had it flushed and had a ruff winter and hot summer this year in buffalo. P.S. Are u near the Columbus area i play hockey at the chiller rinks every march, buy u a few beers for the help lol.
October 1, 2011 at 11:00 am #440331I’m actually in Cincinnati but I have family near Buffalo that I visit from time to time so perhaps I’ll catch you when I’m up that way. Keep us posted on the fix.
October 2, 2011 at 11:00 am #440332Sounds good. So it seems that i fixed the shifting issue and blinking “S” light by readjusting the neutral safety switch(contacts are almost down to the copper). The brake lamp still comes on, and when on wont let me shift out of park. You think it could be a lazy brake light switch or something on the pedal? I checked all the bulbs they all work when on dimmer and when pressed, no corrosion in sockets.
October 3, 2011 at 11:00 am #440333The brake light switch is not often the problem and if it was a problem you would not have any brake lights or the cruse would not operate properly. You may have to replace the PRNDL switch in order to fix it, I know you say you cleaned the contacts however I find that the best thing to use is the contact cleaner that I recommended.
October 18, 2011 at 11:00 am #440334Hey guys sorry it took me so long to get back, I started working 3rd shift. So i ended up replacing the PRNDL safety switch still to no avail. Same problems as before only comes out of park when it wants to when brake lamp is lit and the S light blinks on very dewy mornings. Is there a next step or should i bring it to a specialist?
October 18, 2011 at 11:00 am #440335Have you visually inspected the wiring leading to the prndl switch?
October 19, 2011 at 11:00 am #440336I’m still thinking it’s the adjustment, if you don’t get it just right it won’t work correctly and as a result you will have the problems you have including the D4 light. Also make sure that when you installed it that you got the pin for the shifter in the slot on the switch.
