      Good afternoon everyone.
1992 Accord EXR failed emissions test…..
      issues –
NO reading almost double the allowable ppm.
CO% almost four times the allowable reading.

The internet and a paper clip helped me pull OBD codes 1, 41 and 43 from my 1992 accord.

      Code 1 –

        @Big C

Prior to reading your post I went ahead and removed the EGR valve itself.

High NO is usually the result of an EGR or catalytic converter problem. As for the EGR the cleaning the valve probably won’t cut it you may have to go in and clean the passages. As for the cat the easiest way to tell if it’s working is after the car is warmed up take it’s temperature and the inlet and the outlet, it should be 100

@ BigC – tested the EGR with the vacuum pump and it’s operational.
@ ETCG – EGR port plugs were pulled, ports cleaned and new plugs installed.

There is now a very noticeable exhaust leak in the front pipe at the flex.

There is something else that helps with NOx emissions and that’s the catalytic converter, if you strike out with the EGR you may be headed there next to get the NOx down.

Fixed the leak in the exhaust…
                Failed the etest.

Changed the catalytic converter….and then it PASSED!!

Thanks to all contributors to this thread for all your help.
It was pretty nice to solve a problem systematically rather than taking shots in the dark…(and the wallet).

It’s not the valve that normally gets clogged, it’s normally the passages from what I’ve seen. You could redo the test to see but if the NOx is still high then it’s time to start looking at the catalytic converter.

                      Hey Eric…..you must be tired, man…..you’re a work-horse…
Changed cat on your advice earlier and car passed e-test.
Car is good to go….until next time.
                      Thanks a million.

Sweet thanks for keeping us up to date. It is true, some of my days can get pretty long but it’s hard for me to say no to someone asking for help.
