      Hello all I am having a probelm with my jeep, it has over 130k on it. It had a oscillating noise when driving from the front which when you turn the steering wheel to the right the noise would stop, found out that the right wheel bearing was bad, replaced the bearing but I still have a whinning sound from the front but this one is constant the noise is more noticeable around 35 and up mph.when on the highway and making a slight right bend the niose dissapears, if you turn slightly to the right the noise (to me) feels louder. I feel there is a problem with the front differential. I hope I have discribe the problem accurately enough has anyone had this problem or have any advice on this problem, should I give out this job to a shop or can this be repaired at home.

          It sounds to me like you still have a bad wheel bearing. Maybe the other side.

            My bet would be bad wheel bearing too! Generally you should replace both wheel bearings when one goes bad. You don’t always have to but it’s one of those good practice things. If one has wore bad enough to cause noise then the other one isn’t far behind. My opinion is to replace the other side and that will probably fix your noise. Jack the front end of your car up and go to the side that you haven’t replaced yet. Grab the wheel at the top and bottom an wiggle. Check for play and clunking. This will indicate a bad wheel bearing. Also spin in and listen closely for any noise. Spin the fixed side first just so you know exactly what a good one sounds like. And check it for play first so you know exactly what a good one feels like. I just replaced both wheel bearings on my 2000 Grand Prix. My passengers side was bad and had a lot of play/noise, but my drivers side sounded a lot better and had no play. I went ahead and replaced both and when I took the (good) wheel bearing off to replace it all the grease was dried up and it wasn’t long for this world anyways. Good luck! Keep us updated!!

              Before you go for the wheel bearing, check the splash shield behind the rotor. Especially after work like that is done. It’s entirely possible it’s just making contact with the rotor and making the noise.

                Funny you should mention that Eric . but when i got this jeep there was no splash guards on this jeep,I don’t know if it is me but i can feel the vibrations in my feet, I have the other wheel bearing and will install it on the weekend and will make you all know the results. Should all jeeps have this guard on the front hub assembly?

                  Latest u[date on the problem … Firstly please forgive me for taking so long to reply , as i just did the the repair a couple of hours ago, Secondly the guilty part was in fact the other side wheel bearing, thank you all for your help in this problem….

                  I did however notice that were the axle shaft exits the the diff assembly it seems to be wet , fluid not grease , is there a seal near the spline end of the axle shaft, as there is none near to the boot end, once again many thanks
