A little jerking issue

      Hey guys,

My car clocked 171,000KMs (almost 106,000miles). And lately it started making a slight jerking issue on move off and sometimes when I accelerate from a speed of 16KMpH (10MPH). Jerk on acceleration happens only sometimes. There is no signs of misfires. Spark plug looked like it needed replacement. I just to want to make sure if there is something else I should check. So, I can fix them all in one go. And my car is a 1996 Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6 with a manual transmission.

      Thanks,
      🙂

Check the basics, cap rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter if you
have one. Here is a link to help you with performance issues.

Since there are 20 different things that could cause your problem I would start with the obvious. If the plugs are worn out replace them. They could be the cause.

Symptoms like that under engine load are often due to ignition failures. If you feel the plugs are old, perhaps you should start with those. It’s probably a good idea to check the rest of the ignition system as well.

Thanks guys. Every mechanics I showed the plug wires said the wires look great and doesn’t look like that causing the issue. Hope changing the spark plugs will solve the issue. 🙂

I would check first the fuel and the air filters. Don’t change the plug wires unless you’ve tested them with a water sprinkle and they’ve failed the test.

If you have some sort of Idle air control and it is sticking, that might be the problem too, along with TPS sensor going bad. I noticed that my car occasionally does the same thing when taking off. If the idle goes a bit too low, the IAC tries to compensate and goes too far and causes a bit of a jerk.

                    Thanks.
Air filter is pretty much new. Fuel filter is doubtful.

I will check that too. I was going through my car’s workshop manual today I did see a method mentioned in it to test the IAC.

Look great does not = working properly.

Long ago when I was not a mechanic yet I had a ’94 Talon that hitched and jerked on acceleration. Shops told me that the plugs and wires were fine and ohmed out with no issues. One day for giggles I replaced the wires and WOW the problem was gone. Turns out the number 1 wire was shorting out when hot and put under a load.

Thanks for sharing. I might give a shot on replacing the spark plugs for now as I am a student I can’t afford much for awhile.

Is there any other method to test the plugs wires?

Sorry for the late reply guys. Two days back I just replaced the spark plugs and man the car runs smooth now. I had doubt which spark plug to use and the one which was already there was the wrong one. Thanks guys for your help. 🙂
