Long story for short. I have a 02 Subaru Legacy.

It makes a skidding noise when apply brake. The ABS sensor went on. The shop checked it give me left front code 23. Other three doesn’t make any sense to the mechanic.

I took the tires out and cleaned the ABS sensors. Left front is pretty bad filled with metal debris(it looks like the tip is made from magnetic). The teeth of the tone rings are rusted. I tried to clean a couple not all. Anyway, it didn’t do the trick.

So, I purchased a tone ring. The question is what kind of tool or method should I use to put this tone ring on the axle. Since the tone ring on this model is attached to the axle. I assume it’s pretty tight.

What should I do if even after replacing the tone ring it still doesn’t work.

      Thanks

It appears to be a press on fit.
Requiring you to remove the CV axle in order to rework it.
My thought is if you remove the CV axle, you do a good cleaning of existing tone ring.
Wire brush, sand paper whatever it takes to get a completely clean and shiny.

Also do a complete cleaning of the area where the ABS sensor mounts.

Make sure you have a completely clean and level surface for the sensor to seat on to.
My guess is that between the rust jacking under the sensor and the build up on the tone ring.
Is what is causing your issue.

          Appreciate the suggestion.

Cleaning the tone ring is one of my plans. I will try to clean them as clean as possible. Do you think I can spray paint on the spindle where the mounting area since I’m in New England? Of course not the tone ring.

So, What is a press on fit? Does that require some special hydraulic device?

You could, but I would think a coating of liquid film or perhaps silicone brake grease might do better
