My Brother has a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup. Twice recently he has a rear brake pad fall out of the truck. The first one tore up the rotor which he replaced. Also replaced the caliper for good measure. Now he says he lost another one! I have never even heard of a brake pad falling out of a vehicle so do not know where to go with this one. Any ideas?

I have never seen a pad fall out either. check the abutment clips are in
place and fully seated. check all the shims are there and the pads are correct
        and installed correct.

I have seen pads fall out before, usually the friction material breaks loose from the steel backing plate wears away then the plate falls out. Or the pads may have been installed wrong.

Thanks for the replays. I’ll tell him to check the areas you talk about. He did call me back to say the backing plate was still there but all the lining was gone . That was most likely what happened the first time but then the plate itself came loose and tore up the rotor. I told him to open his wallet and pay for some good pads. We’ll see.

First, I don’t agree with coating the back of brake pads with grease. I don’t think it does any good, especially in this case, and I believe it can cause other issues. You don’t see pads from the factory installed with grease. Probably for a good reason.

That said, check the wheel bearing. If the wheel bearing is having issues or there is damage to the caliper mount it could be the cause. Lastly, make sure they’re the correct pads. If not, that may also be a possible cause.

              Keep us posted.

Thanks Eric for the reply. Love your site and have learned a lot from it. My brother had his mechanic put ceramic pads on this time. I told him about the caliper mount in case it happens again. This is a rear wheel so would a wheel bearing still be an issue?

It might. Not likely, but it might. This is a strange situation so I’ll admit that I’m grasping at straws here. A good set of pads is probably a good start to solving the problem.

Keep us posted on your progress.
