I’ve been asked about this quite a bit over the years, and I though it was about time I make a video. What are your thoughts for those looking to get into the repair field?

I got a job as an auto mechanic at my place of work without formal schooling. I got most of my training by working on my own stuff (including household appliances, home wiring, welding, computers etc). Here at home I have backhoes, skid steer loader, farm tractors, trucks, cars, trailers and motorcycles which I do almost all the work on myself. At work I work on cars, trucks, fork trucks, cranes, electric golf carts,a shuttle wagon, snow plows, salt spreaders, hi reaches, fire trucks and well, anything that has wheels and moves within the plant. I am the only mechanic to take care of over 40 pieces of rolling stock. When it is an involved job I have outside vendors come to do the work, i.e big generators. Also for new vehicle diagnostics they go back to the dealer. The reason it is done this way is they are under warranty so they go back to the dealership and the company I work for doesn’t give continuing training so it is very hard to keep up with all the new technology. Even though I didn’t have any formal schooling I wish I did. I feel I would know more of the real basics. Don’t get me wrong I know how stuff works and this is why I got the job, but a lot of it I do by reading the manual and going from there. Some leassons doing it this way has been learned the hard way. So for me I wish I would’ve had school and gotten ASE certification but at 51 yrs old I no longer feel a need for either.

Have a question about the automotive field.
Used to work IT. Now all those jobs are gone in our small town. One thing I notice. Employers wanted you to have all the paper work, knollage, and experience, and know everything. Then when you get hired, the employer who knows nothing about your field starts telling you how they want it done. Often, they would be text book school 101 things not to do, but the employer would insist in doing it that way. Then when they get in trouble because things don’t work out. They blame the staff, who told them not to do that in the first place.

Dose that stuff go on in the automotive field. For example, maybe on the first day of school, they told you for this repair you must use xyz part or tool, or the job will fail in 30 days. Then your employer tells you to do it their way, just to have the job fail in 30 days. Then insists it must be the techs who messed up the job?

Always wondered why the employer insisted in all this education, but then will not listen to those who have it.

The school that I go to has two automotive programs . One for all types of vehicles and one designed for GM. Unfortunely no deisel or bodywork. I have been very pleased with the education that im recieving. I already have my state emmisonns license. At the end of this semester, I will have my a/c license. I’m hoping to get my state inspection license this coming fall.

Eric, that was a very good video (in my opinion). I believe in everything you said. I went to automotive college in the early seventies and not only do I not regret it but I can honestly say that I still use much of what I learned there almost every day. There wasn’t too many choices for schooling within a reasonable distance here in those days but I’m happy with where I did go.

I might have had a bit an ego when I started there(as well as others) but after the third week I couldn’t believe that there was so much to know to repair cars effectively. I was totally flabbergasted. It was very hard to complete the courses and work at a job at the same time but If I was young again and had to start over I wouldn’t do anything any differently.

This happens in a lot of fields. It has more to do with bad management than anything else. In fact I cover it in other ETCG1 videos as well. As far as what to do about it, well you can either wait it out or look for a new job. Easier said than done I know.
