I have a 1986 Toyota Camry and was wondering if maybe my pedal or something is going too far. It seems when I don’t floor the clutch it goes into gear a whole lot smoother. Is there an adjustment you can do to fix this? It is a hydrologic system.

Every car has its sweet spot where it goes into gear perfectly. Drive it more, you will memorize where the sweet spot is eventually!

There is no adjustment outside of the initial set up. Hydraulic clutches are designed to be self adjusting. If you’re having an issue it could be the clutch hydraulics OR a clutch issue. You can check the hydraulics for leaks. If you don’t find any then there may be a problem with the clutch components. This video is on a different vehicle but the principals will apply.

Sounds like a wore out thrust washer in the trans to me. Probably too much endplay at the input shaft.

Thanks, the first video helped a lot. I Will be looking for any leaks tomorrow. If I don’t find any, I have a feeling it is the synchro for third gear. If that’s the case, I will drive the car until the transmission dies and get one from a yard, or rebuild it. Thanks again for the help.

Well the hydrologic system seems to be leak free. I noticed that when it is cold outside and when I first start driving, it shifts into all gears just fine. After driving a few miles and it warms up, it hates third. Possibly the gear oil too thin? I have no idea how gear oil works. I know in the video Eric posted said how his differential fluid is special because it changes viscosity. Does gear oil do the same?

when it doesn’t want to go into gear after a while does it grind or just not want to go into gear but doesn’t make a grinding noise? is it only in 3rd gear that it has trouble going into?

When I first start driving, it goes into gear just fine. After a few miles, it grinds if I don’t take my time putting it into gear. When I let of the clutch it pops out sometimes too. Yes, only third.

Here is a video showing the symptoms of third gear while the car is not moving. clutch pedal to the floor and the car has been driven for a while.

It might be a fluid issue as you suggest. I’d recommend changing the fluid with the proper fluid and rechecking for the condition. I can’t say what the proper fluid is as Toyota used a few different things. Check with your service manual or parts supply person to find out what should be in there and replace it.

Well I got the fluid changed, but the issue is still there. Most likely the synchro. Oh well, I will drive it until it dies and replace or rebuild the transmission when the time comes. Thank you guys for all the help.

Well I noticed that it is doing the same thing in first gear. I guess I should have mentioned that it shifts Kind of hard. At a dead stop it is hard shifting into all gears. It will go into first gear smoothly when the car is slowly moving forward, same with reverse but moving in reverse of course. Also it will occasionally grind when I put it into first at a dead stop. Maybe not disengaging all the way? I will test That theory tomorrow while putting the car up on stands. While watching the wheels. There seems to be no leaks in the hydrolic system… well I hope this is enough info thanks for all of the help.

If it’s all gears it may be a clutch issue. When the clutch wears out it can make engaging the gears difficult. Before you condemn the trans I would replace the clutch and recheck for the problem. An easy way to check for this is to see how easy it is to shift gears with the engine off. If you can easily do this with the engine off then it’s possible that it’s just a clutch issue and replacing the clutch should solve the problem.

Thank you Eric. That makes me feel a 100 percent better about changing the clutch. I am getting it replaced along with all the other things in that area. The 13th is the date. With the car off, all gears shift smoothly. When it is on, they do not. Thanks again. Also the rear main seal is going to be changed out. Thought this would be the perfect time. 🙂
