Hi everyone, I’m from India and I own an India-made diesel SUV called Scorpio mated to 6-speed torque converter AT from Australian DSI. This is 2 years old with 25,000 miles on odo. The problem is, mornings when I start her up and slot into drive, it takes full 2/3 seconds before it starts crawling on idle rpm. This, I can live with. But what I cannot is, upshifts to 2nd and 3rd takes long time and happen at very high rpm. But once past 3rd, the other gears, i.e. 4th, 5th and 6th come up in quick succession and car just zooms. It’s almost like driving two different cars. Downshifts are unnecessary, too. I mean, I approach a speedbreaker which can easily be taken in 2nd gear (diesel torque), but the car unnecessarily comes down to 1st, sending the tacho flying. I’m really clueless. Help anyone, please.

engine light? if so did you get any codes? sounds like some transmission issues that need to be sorted out, maybe some solenoids or something… codes can tell us more.

Thanks Ace for prompt reply. No check-light of any kind on instrument panel. And it threw up no error codes. I live in a small town and local mech is as clueless as I am. Percentage of automatic cars is minuscule in India. And a rarity in my town. His guess is, either valve body or 2nd, 3rd cog solenoids. I thought I would seek some tips here before I let him lay his hand on the gear-box. Recently, I flushed and re-filled with OE spec ATF. Made no difference. Filter is ok too. And so are, speed sensors, EGR, TCM. Could it be torque converter?

            Hey PGS,

I am an Indian too based in UAE. I once got the chance to drive an automatic Scorpio and even that drove like the way you said. The driver who drove that said that happened to be normal and said you have feather the throttle so it upshifts quicker. Since then I never rented any automatics in India. If possible try taking it to the dealer and ask for any update or so it makes some difference apparently.

Driving that Auto Scorpio was a horrific experience as I couldn’t overtake vehicles as I expected. I initially thought it was because of me as I rarely drive autos but feathering the throttle kinda helped and the vehicle never acted crazy in the driver’s hand who drives it daily.

there is a maltitude of things that can cause a car to oddly shift, bad vehicle speed sensor can cause erratic shifting or cause the vehicle to go into a limp in mode and stay in one gear. a bad pressure control solenoid can cause what feels like false neutrals, or even it not to shift correctly, warn out clutch packs in the transmission which i doubt as little miles as the car has, a bad torque converter would cause the vehicle to feel like its slipping like a bad clutch at times, lots of varaibles, its much easier to diagnose when you are right there driving the vehicle and can feel what its doing for yourself.

when it does shift does it seem to bang in gear?

                  try this too

Hi Ace, speedometer works fine and no, there is no banging of gears as they shift, up or down. It is lazy through 2nd, 3rd though. Once there, 4th, 5th and 6th come up lightning quick and the car just shoots forward,as though to make up for the lost time. Like I told you all the initial lethargy vaporises and it is transformed into a flying beast. Very very baffling indeed. You have to see this thing to believe it. If torque converter or valve body or speed sensors or TCM were bad, things would have stayed bad all through. This one just leaps forward like a leopard from 4th/5th. This makes me surmise that may be 2nd/3rd gear solenoids are gone.
