determin engine knocking

Dear Eric and al the other forum members

I drive a Chrysler Neon from 1995.

Now sins a while i have an engine noise and did try and find it but it sounds from deep in the engine.
Till so far i came with crank bearing knock ore piston slapping ( yeah i thought about the b* slapping also )

Is there anyway to really determine what noise it is ?

I thought of pulling the oil pan and touch the piston with a wooden rod ore something .

Hi JD… it would be best if you repost this question in the service and repair part of the forum as that is where we answer most of the tech probs/questions. can you give us a little more information on the car is it a standard or automatic transmission ? how many miles on the engine ?… that said , have you changed the oil recently ? any metal bits in the oil? you can use a mechanics stethescope to listen to the motor and possibly pin point the area of the noise. let us know and welcome to the forums.
