Long story short, I was trying to accelerate hard in my 1999 Corolla, and I downshifted into 2nd at about 70 mph (didn’t realize how fast I was going). I watched as the tach instantly zipped up to 8k (redline is 6k), thought “oh shit”and kicked in the clutch again, but it was too late. The engine stalled. No bang or anything, just stalled. So, still going about 65 mph, I tried to restart the car using the key, nothing. Put it in 5th, released the clutch, nothing. I managed to coast safely to the side of the road in neutral, and I popped the hood. It smelled heavily of clutch– later I realized this was due to my attempts to restart using 5th. I tried starting with the key, and the starter sounded like it really was trying, but couldn’t spin the engine. I put the car in 5th and tried just pushing it, and it reached a point where the engine just wouldn’t spin anymore, going either direction. So, does it sound like the engine is seized, or something else? There’s no hole in the block, so I didn’t throw a rod or anything, but it’s certainly possible there’s internal damage. What do you guys think?
Also, the shop I had it towed to is closed over the weekend, so I’m considering going there today and removing the oil pan just to see if there’s any metal chunks in it. Should I even bother?

It sounds like the engine has gone to Toyota Heaven. You would have to remove the cylinder head,oil pan or both to confirm any damage.
If the engine will not turn freely then sounds serious.
I wonder if you shattered the timing chain with the high rev?Thanks for the replies guys. I’ll wait for the real technician to check it out Monday (I’m hardly a technician, the most I’ve done is replace my starter motor and rear strut assemblies), but assuming I did kill it, the question then becomes do I replace the engine or the car. The rest of the car is actually in very good condition for its age, though the front strut assemblies will need replaced soon, but I can replace the whole car for $1000. Will see what the estimate is come Monday….

well you can get a brand new Chevy Aveo (Daewoo Kalos) for like 10k 😀 more dependable than toyota anyday 😀

My Corolla has been through a lot of abuse, both at my hands and at the hands of the previous owner (my father), so frankly it dying now after a single mistake is pretty impressive. I wouldn’t trust a Chevy to do that (though I do love their trucks). Plus the Chevy is about 10x more than my budget.
Frankly if I were to replace the car, I would just get a mid-90s Camry or somesuch. I really hated the corolla because it’s so lifeless and dull, but at this point I just need a car for the summer to get to work. After the summer I’ll have money to get something I really want. I know I can unload a Camry easily enough, so it might just be my best option :S

Those are even worse! The daewoo was okay, I liked it, even though it was slow, and the tranny thought it was cool to slip at only 80,000 miles, it was a little fun, then chevy made it heavier when they bought daewoo out, and it was like… junk… Thank god they replaced it with the new sonic! But I wouldn’t consider any GM reliable with the exception of a few cars they’ve made…
Toyotas are reliable because unlike many companies they polish the same already reliable turd for decades…
Those 8th Gen Corollas may be dull and boring, but as long as you don’t have an oil burning problem the 1zz-fe engines are pretty awesome. The 4 speeds are darn near bulletproof (I won’t touch a 3 speed automatic though)….
Since yours is a non-vvt engine (Prior to 2000), you can find a replacement scrapyard engine for around $400-$500. VVT 1.8’s cost over $1000 from most scrapyards….
Mid to late 90’s model Camry’s have Oil Gelling issues and I highly suggest inspecting under the valve covers before I bought one…

I have an oil burning problem. In fact I added about 1.5 quarts about a week ago because there was just a drip on the end of the dip stick. Like I said, that car has been abused to hell….

I figured, but then there’s the labor costs since I don’t think I could take on such a large job myself.

Annoyingly, I was just reading a couple threads on people who did the same thing… and were fine. No lasting damage. One kept hitting a “wall” of about 5k rpm, but after restarting the car it was fine. Seems I’m the only one who managed to do some real damage 🙁
^ If that’s so you could try rolling your engine over without spark plugs, if it just stalled something like gas or oil could have caused something like a hydro lock situation… Since you do have an oil burning problem there is the change that high RPMs caused high oil pressure pushing more into the cylinders than normal.

Huh. I hadn’t even considered that. That would be amazing if that’s all it is– assuming lo lasting damage of course. Unfortunately since I’m at the mercy of friends to drive me places I can’t actually get back to the shop to try it out. But thanks for giving me some hope banana:

Depends on how much the car means to you but being a Toyota tech I suggest just replacing the motor it isn’t that hard and shouldn’t cost to much
