Displays always on this normal?

Fiancee’s 1999 VW Beetle.

I have noticed that when the key is removed from the car the Odometer along with gear select (automatic) and the clock is ALWAYS on it never shuts off. To me this seems to be a way to drain the battery. Is this suppose to be this way or is there a wiring issue she should have a shop address?

I’m reasonably sure it shuts off after you exit the vehicle and close the door. Also if I’m not mistaken VW uses a kind of ‘glow in the dark’ backing to their instruments which may be what you’re seeing.
