I drive a manual so it is relativity hard to be distracted while driving. However, other people seem to have an addiction to their phones whereas a cell phone is something I can personally live without. In my 1974, whatever I do the truck responds to directly, there is no isolation between me and the road, and no computer to make corrections or adjustments… so I am forced to pay attention to my driving.
Cel phone use while driving is an epidemic. It is against the law, people are fined, but in this way they treat it like speeding when it should be like drunk driving. I can put up with a lot of shit on the roads, but super aggressive driving (weaving in and out of traffic to get a few paces up), and cel phone use are really the only things I think the police need to worry about.
I think that your license should be revoked using a cel phone in the car in motion. It is probably the worst possible thing you could do, and I see it every god damn day. I often call people out on it and have gotten into a few fights. One time, a women with 3 kids in the back seat!! People drive the absolute WORST with phones in their hands, conversations on their mind.
People do not take cars seriously. They want to see how many likes they have on facebook and other narcissistic things. It’s a huge societal problem with these phones everywhere and the zombies they create. Any phone call can wait a few minutes till you can pull over safely. Remember, as little at 15 years ago, there were no cel phones and people managed to find their destinations, and catch up with loved ones without killing anyone!

I have good logic for you and I think you would agree, should you talk on a cellphone while operating a firearm? heck no… should you talk on a cell phone while using a chain saw? no way man! a car IS equally as dangerous when talking on a phone while driving it.

I don’t see them as a necessity as people used to get along fine without them.

yep…[/quote] Smartphones while helpful, were the final nail in the coffin for many people who can’t bear to take their eyes outta their phone. Before, we only had brick phones, then flip phones…both of which you could make calls with and not much else. Smartphones created a whole new level of dependance and distraction.
I think I have only talked on my phone while driving a hand full of times, and this is when I was on the highway, and there as ZERO traffic, driving down the middle of nowhere.

My dad forced proper driving habits on me. If I get a call, I leave the phone on the seat and don’t touch it.
Sometimes ive checked my phone or sent a text while sitting at a set of traffic lights if not dont really use my phone because it can happen so fast. been told that the second you look away is 200m of the road you didnt see coming
Cant believe its legal in some parts of the states thats just wow completely 100% flat out illegal here in australia pretty sure everywhere but there is much less states here then the usa
Even without distractions there are plenty of dangerous out there. I usually hang in the right lane since everyone seems to love to speed and I’m never really in a hurry and I get over when there’s an on-ramp full of cars about to merge. I did just that yesterday and some girl in a beemer decided she was going to cut across 3 lanes after she merged, I was right next to her and had to slam on my brakes and hope the person behind me was paying attention. I’m not worried about my own ability to drive safely, I pay a lot more attention to the drivers around me and what they’re doing so I can keep a nice safe buffer zone.
I work at a body shop, enough said.
The amount of ditsy, idiot, distracted drivers that come through the door blows me away.
“The curb came out of nowhere”
“I didn’t see she was stopped”
“I didn’t know it was a no passing zone”
“It was her fault for turning”
“Seemed like good conditions to pass”
“I was just checking my phone, it was really important”
I Hear these things come out of the mouths of owners of HIGH END vehicles. Not just old shit-boxes, but brand new luxery SUV’s. Some people just don’t give a fuck about getting an an accident.
“Oh well my insurance will pay to fix it.”
“Oh it’s just an inconvienience, hope I can get my car back for christmas”
It’s a joke. Nobody takes the responsibility of vehicle ownership seriously anymore. I’ve personally loaded and unloaded vehicles that people have died in and been cut out of, because of distracted driving, poor driving skill, bad driving habits.
It’s one thing I will never fuck around with. Driving is a serious responsibility, lets keep it that way.
Let me offer a different perspective regarding cell phones. It’s all the rage to blame EVERY accident on cell phones, when in fact there’s very little data indicating that cell phones have caused an increase in accidents. Think about how ubiquitous cell phone use in cars is. Accident and death rates should be SOARING! In fact, accident rates have been steady for ten years and highway death rates have generally declined (due to safer cars). If cell phones caused all the accidents we’re told they do, the insurance companies would absolutely be hammering their customers about it.
So what’s the explanation? Simple. Cell phones don’t cause accidents, people who don’t pay attention do. And I’m willing to bet the same “5% of drivers who cause 80% of accidents” caused just as many accidents before cell phones came along as they do now. And who are these high accident rate drivers? By in large, they are either inexperienced drivers or elderly drivers. But while inexperienced drivers use cell phones a lot, the elderly hardly do at all. Yet their accident rates (per mile driven) are similar.
I am NOT advocating talking or texting while driving. I’m simply pointing out that the data do not support demonizing cell phone use, nor will outlawing cell phone use put an end to accidents. But our state legislators love this hobby horse, and I’m sure the laws will continue to proliferate. But for every cell phone law, there are a thousand legal ways to distract yourself (eating, reading, talking, etc.).
For full disclosure, all four drivers in our family have BT-connected phones, and the rule is to keep the phone in a pocket or purse while driving (so texting is not a temptation). I pay the insurance for three of us, so I make the rules.
My thoughts on distracted drivers? They kill people each year. When I drive I’m locked in. So much so that I often anticipate dangers caused by other drivers. I drive on some of the busiest and most dangerous in America (George Washington Bridge, Route 95, Route 78, Route 22, Garden State Parkway, Manhattan and Bronx city streets). Add in NYC taxi drivers, potholes, and dozens of pedestrians and you’ve got a jungle to navigate through. So, long story short, if I was distracted for even 1 second, I could accidentally end the life of another human, or myself. I hope everyone else out there is paying attention like I do.

I miss the 20th Century!

Both my cars have steering wheel controls for the stereo , and hands free for the cell phones so it looks like I’m talking to myself to other drivers , which is an distraction in itself ; )
