What is the black piece of hose near the quick disconnect on Eric’s air hose?

I am assuming he is using a 3/8″ air line, but I want to know what the black hose piece near the quick disconnect is because I have an air leak near there when I use an air impact and move it around. I don’t have the black hose piece on my air line. Air leaks out sometimes when I turn the impact a certain way from the quick connects.

Some hoses come with that piece. It is essentially a piece of tubing (often heat and chemical resistant) that merely sleeves over the end of the hose. This prevents kinking at this point and reduces the stress put on the point where the hose attaches to the fitting. Stress here can cause tiny wholes which can cause leaks; however, if you had such a leak it would be constant. I would bet that your leak is caused by a poor fitting nipple and quick connect which is common with use. As the metal parts are always in contact and swiveling they begin to wear down ever so slightly, and air begins to pass by. It really isn’t a an issue (most of the time), but I don’t know how bad your leak is. I tend to use Husky brand swivel nipples (which decrease the stress and they’re cheaper than most swivel nipples–Not to mention the quality is descent and stainless steel). If the leak is bothering you I would start with a brand new (brass) quick disconnect. The first thing to where is the steel balls in the quick disconnect. If you any questions let me know; feel free to continue the thread or private message me. I am here to help.

some air connections always leak due to there design which is why i don’t use the cheap nitto ones that come with tools instead i use ryco style ones which have a diffrent shape and as far as i know seal better

Don’t mean to revive an old thread of mine but gaseousmercury is right.

The air leak in my line was caused by a harbor freight male coupler. I replaced the coupler with a brass Milton brand coupler and no more air leaks! I also have more air pressure at the tool because of the coupler change out.

I noticed on the Harbor Freight coupler that were the air comes into the inlet of the tool is canted to the side whereas the Milton is aimed straight ahead. I think that may have been the problem.

I also had Harbor Freight fittings and all of mine leaked. I swapped them out with Legacy Color-connex (you can get them on Amazon or Tractor Supply) and I haven’t had a leak since. I like Harbor Freight but their air fittings are junk.
