      Okay,

This is in regards to a 2004 Chevy Malibu 2.2L ecotec, but the general question can be widely applicable.

–> In the evap/purge system, what is/are the components in the engine bay, and what is the black box at the rear of the vehicle by the fuel tank?

Here is what I have learned dealing with an issue on my 06 Impala with a “tighten gas cap” (P0455) message. There is a Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid in the rear driver side fender. Then you have a Vapor Purge Solenoid on the intake. The black box is the Vapor Canister, where the gas fumes are held.
