      Hi,

I am performing a rotor and stud replacement on my 1996 Honda Accord since a few weeks back, I actually broke two of the studs trying to take the front right wheel off. I had am following the procedures outlined in Eric’s video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xIUAMl-oRQ, How to Replace Captive Rotors. I took the knuckle off and ran M10x1.25x75mm bolts down into hub/bearing assembly. I used an impact hammer on the bolts, but somehow it seems that the air hammer stripped all the threads in the wheel bearing. Does this seem to make sense? Eric didn’t seem to have any trouble with this in the video. Any other ideas on how to get the wheel bearing out of the knuckle. I took the four bolts out but since the threads are stripped they won’t go back in. Can I smack on the rotor with a hammer? I am trying to avoid damaging the hub as that is much more expensive than just replacing the bearing. Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

      Steve

You might be in a spot where a press would be of help. If a shop press isn’t an option, perhaps you can get a bolt style “on the car” bearing press and set that up to remove the hub / bearing assembly.

When I did mine, I used longer bolts, threaded them in from the back of the hub just a few turns (no impact) and then used a hammer to beat on them, hitting each one just a few times before moving on, and worked the bearing out that way. That isn’t going to be an option for you though, so a press kit is probably going to be the best way to go.

When I did this I removed the knuckle from the car. I then threaded long bolts into the mounting holes. Using a hammer I beat the bearin/hub on the bolts to knock it free of the knuckle. From there I used a 10 ton enerpac press (yeah I got it from an old factory auction) and by using the old rotor and a crummy old socket I picked up for a buck at a pawn shop pressed out the hub. Cut off the bearing inner ring with a dremel. From there I used the press with a bigger crap socket, married the hub to the bearing.

I picked up some grade 8 bolts from Advanced Auto, Lowe’s only carried grade 5 bolts. It turns out that most of the damage was done to the bolt itself, only somewhat to the thread but not as much as i originally thought. I soaked the bearing in PB blaster since I was going to replace it anyways, and eventually knocked the hub bearing assembly from the knuckle. I found a friend with a 20 ton shop press and we were able to press the hub out of the bearing. Getting the inner race of the hub was difficult since there wasnt really anything to grab onto. We cut notches on the race with a cutoff wheel, applied heat and eventually got the inner race off of the hub. Thanks.

Usually with the inner race, I cut a groove through as much of it as I can with a dremel, stopping just short of getting into the hub, then set a chisel into that grove, and give it a good wack or two. That is usually enough to fracture the race, and get it to come off. DO wear safety glasses when doing this though, it is not unheard of for a chunk of that race to splinter off, and go whizzing through the air.
