I have a 91 honda accord se auto. Been having starting issues with slow turning/ no turning starter ( rebuilt it 3 years ago new brush, lube, bearing the works) low mileage since then.

driving car 2-3 mile 4 days a week. 1.5 mile turn off then come back home. I have Infrequent 30+ min trips (maybe once a month).

Was only getting 20 amps from charging system.
pulled alternator, tested bad, changed it.
Still had low amp out put. was main engine ground cable due to corrosion. was only get like 25-30 amps. after a rewire (made new cables with marine grade wire) im getting 70-80 amps in park with rpm around 2-3k.

I still every so often have a slow turning starter. If i jump starter bypassing ignition switch, it will start up strong. Then next start or 2 will start with key, but then the start wont turn or turn slow. I can then sometimes jump the starter bypassing ignition some time it will be slow aka dead battery.

my question: is what i’m explaining normal for low mileage usage? or should i be hunting for bad cabin ground/ ignition switch / parasitic draw / etc.. ?

If its normal what can i do to fix this problem. I do have a smart battery charger that goes in to float mode.

      thanks for your time.

Short trips ( 2-3 mile 4 days a week ) are not enough to recoup the drain on a battery.
With out knowing the battery age or condition……
I would load test the battery first to see what its condition is and replace if needed.

Beyond that, you might consider taking more frequent longer drives which will not only help the battery, but also remove condensation from the oil.
Short trips do not allow the oil time enough to heat up to operating temps and allow it to ” dry out ”

As to the battery, you can install a battery maintainer and plug your vehicle in to keep the battery topped off.
Just remember to unplug it .
