I changed the fuel pump on 2004 civic before the top was cracked and smelled fuel inside the car. Now the fuel gauge is funny. Showed empty, but only took 1/2 a tank to fill up. Is this a faulty floater issue. Need help.

Could be the float, the resistor that registers the level of fuel, a wiring/connection issue or a faulty ground.
