i have a 3400 that just blew a head gasket, or so i thought. when you say its leaking from the intake i would think its from the coolent lines running into the intake. how did you verify that is was not a head gasket?
It does have the symptoms of a blown head gasket with the milkshake looking stuff on the oil cap but I took my cover of the engine and started looking around the manifold and saw water coming out of it and my car blows white smoke from the pipe all the time and I keep putting water in it almost every other day to keep it from overheating
Super common. I’d def. get them replaced, its not a lot of fun when those plastic intakes blow. It’s a pretty straight forward repair.
I’ve done a couple of the intake gaskets on those V6’s. I’ll have a friend of mine forward me the step-by-step we used, got it pretty straight-forward for us, and took us a day and a half. I’d recommend, before you start, going to a junkyard or somewhere and pull a bunch of those fuel injector clips, we lost a couple doing the overhaul, and the only place that had them was the dealer, for $20 apiece, and 2 weeks shipping. PITA, we had to fabricate them, and that added 2-3 hours easy, plus we spent a good 4 hours or so searching for them Saturday (nobody had them – NAPA, Advance, Autozone, dealers, Federated Auto Parts, etc.)
Pretty straight forward job, you’ll need a crows foot, and a ratchet wrench, to get that one bolt hole on the passenger side intake on there, torqued to spec, and nothing but a crows foot will fit in there. Also, you’ll probably want a long-handle thin socket driver so you can manually turn the crankshaft (finding TDC is fun). And a few cans of PB blaster just to clean everything while you’re in there (might as well).
You don’t have to do anything with tdc on that engine, there’s no dist. It’s a very straight forward job, the hardest part is getting the lower intake to re-align with the tensioner when putting the coolant elbow in. I would just remove the tensioner assembly when doing it, it doesn’t hurt to replace the lower coolant elbow as well.
If it’s just the upper plenum leaking it’s a lot easier.
That’s good to know I’ve seen on the Web that they have aluminum elbows also I want the get those they will last longer
Yep, very common. BTW just because you have milky oil that doesn’t always mean a head gasket issue. How to diagnose both of those conditions are actually in this video. Keep us posted on your progress with the gaskets.
BTW would this cause alot of air in the system everytime I take the cap off the radiator the overflow tank make bubbling noise
if there is, you have a bleeder valve on top of the thermostat housing. twist it up to three turns and it will let the air out of the system. and if you have to replace the lower intake gaskets, im doing the job as we speak and it’s pretty straight forward. there is no overhead cam so there is no belt or chain to fuss with.
what gasket set did you get? there are some that have just about all you need. injector seals, that kind of stuff. let me know.
The complete upper intake kit comes with all seals found it on ebay for $79.99 great bargain and the lower intake gasket cost $55.99 than going to the part store and paying around $80 bucks and over $149 for the upper intake so I saved a good bit of money. I can wait a few days for them to arrive also do anybody know what kind of torque wrench I need to get I know all the bolts need to be torque to a certain spec.
