years ago I was asked to participate in a church car fix-up program. People would drive up and we’d give their cars a quick once-over. Most just needed some air in the tires or a consult as to why the suspension squeaked, easy things to do.
One quirky old lady drove up with some unusual car, like an 1974 AMC Hornet. We were a bit surprised, but okay, let’s check it over. We check the usual things and then after 10 minutes of cooling off carefully open up the radiator, and, …… it’s filled with brown gravy! The stuff had the look, smell, and consistency of brown gravy! And it was hot and steaming too! We didn’t have a clue what to say or do, besides suggesting that she get a coolant change rather soon.
Still have no idea what was going on. Ideas?

Just rusty coolant. That sort of thing was common on older cars when the coolant was not flushed and fresh coolant added every few years.

I thought this subject would be about Gravy Grabbers in the shop… LOL.. Shows where my mind is….

Edit: For those who don’t know, a Gravy Grabber is the person who intentionally is given (or takes) all the easy (gravy) jobs for themselves… Closely related to the flush queen, can be spotted by the telltale brown nose, lips puckered for kissing A$$ and/or head inserted in leadership/management’s rectum….Believes he knows everything and can tell you all about how to do any job, but in truth is really more of an annoyance than help… Gets all the good book time jobs and never does anything difficult or that would require working 5 hours on a 3 hour book time job….
A friend and I were driving down a gravel country road one hot summer day when we came across a seventies giant Oldsmobile with the hood up and surrounded by two women and a bunch of kids. We stopped wondering if they needed help. The engine smelled hot so I looked into the engine compartment. No radiator cap and no coolant. One of the ladies explained, “Yeah, we know, there’s a hole in the radiator. That is why we are stopped, we stopped to let the engine cool.” After further conversation I learned that the car was in daily use in this condition and these regular stops were, for them, part of normal driving. Tough car!
