I have a 2003 Highlander, non jbl sound system. I installed new speakers and they have less than a whisper at full volume. Stock speakers make sound, just not great sound.
I went to the dealership and they said there is an external amp, roughly in the middle of the cargo area.
Can that be the cause? If so, can it be removed?

Yes I have, thanks for asking. No external amp, just crappy chinesium steroid that claimed big power, but amps burnt out in seconds. I also had a dead short in the factory wiring for the front right door, so I ran new wire there. A better stereo has it working great and I’m getting ready to install a 4 channel amp when I get more time.

Ensure that the speaker wires are properly connected to both the speakers and the head unit or amplifier. Loose or incorrect connections can result in very low or no sound.
