1993 GMC
4.3 engine
213k milesi was having trouble with my timing after replacing my distributor and it made a horrible noise. i found out i was advanced by about a degree or 2. i corrected it back to 0 degrees and the noise has gotten a lot better but is still there subtlety.. i THINK i feel a very slight jolt here and there but overall feels pretty smooth.
after reconnecting the advance timing wire, the timing gets retarded back by about 10 degrees. i saw a video for a 5.7 engine which is the exact same engine as mine with just the 2 back cylinders not being there. in this video, the guy claimed the advance timing should go forward by 20 degrees and you shouldnt see the timing mark anymore.
when i test drove my truck, it drove just fine it seemed. it was very smooth and very responsive. put my foot down and it went fine with no misses or anything.
i unplugged my battery to reset the ECM to see if anything changes.
am i just being paranoid that the problem isnt fixed yet or is something not working right still?
truck has new distributor that is CarDone brand
new plugs with about 2500 miles on them but thinking of replacing them with better ones due to having detonation problems during their life.
new wires and coil pack that is duralast brand.my diagnosis for the noise is the timing chain.
