I think the honda’s & toyota’s manufactured for the japan domestic market are of better quality than the american market. The american market is only concern about profit than quality.
The body panels are thin as reynolds foil wrap. The front grill is made of disposable dixie pastic cup plast. The DBW system makes is a disapointment to drive, lacking in responsiveness.

I think this has been mentioned in the forum in the past; with Eric also covering the topic.

I’ve never owned an American-origin car, so I’m not going to comment on their reliability. I do own a 2000 Honda Accord, which to my knowledge, was never produced in Japan and was made in the US. It’s served me well thus far.

I doubt a car manufacturer deliberately makes a car “cheap”. I think they have a time and money budget, probably coming from corporate, and they have to make do with what they have. This creates the “most bang-for-your-buck” scenario.

You would have to have somewhat dispensable income and materials to overcome the aforementioned scenario, and the only car manufacturers I see being the closest to that is probably Exotics.

It has been a long time since I owned a purely American car. But, I once owned two American cars that were the same model but different years. The things that broke on one broke on the other. For example, the left differential carrier bearing went out in both cars. One day at the dealer I had the service manager look up the service bulletins for both cars. Sure enough, there were all the problems I had encountered. So, GM knew about these problems but kept making the car, year after year, with these same known problems.

There was a definite quality difference between the German made Volkswagens and the Mexican made ones, the gasoline engines and the diesel engines. Nonetheless, European cars are worse than American cars if you ask me (and American cars are terrible), except the maybe the diesels. Oh I hate them with a fierce, fierce passion.

The Japanese brands now made in the US are known for being very good quality. Ford has made great strides to compete internationally with quality vehicles. GM is going to get bashed for a while but I have hopes they can recover and be stronger for it. Chrysler products – well, they have a mixed bag regarding quality – but they do have some cool “toys!” The Japanese brands are also having recall issues. To me, the winner right now is Subaru and I find that both understandable and odd at the same time. :S

we can sit here and bash and trash talk cars all day long, but in the end i have positive and negative experiences with them all, GM right now has a nasty habit of having vehicles that have issues and they just ignore them and keep making them with the same issue… but i have noticed this is with there newer vehicles, but it depends on the vehicle really, i have noticed W body cars still are reliable if you take care of them, the only time i noticed when they give people issues is when they out right abuse them and beat the crap out of them. ford is doing very well for themselves, and Chrysler, well there Chrysler…

as for imports i think Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Nissan are up there as top sellers, Toyota personally i think is on top of the best selling list, i here a lot of good things said about Subaru as far as quality is concerned, as well as safety and practicality, Toyota makes a very good competitive vehicle for american cars, because they are so plentiful in the us the parts market for them is good and cheep, Honda i noticed has there specialty stuff and there parts can be on the pricey side other than that they are ok, and Nissan, well the they are Nissan….

my opinion is its all about how you look at it, each car has its ups and downs as well as each auto maker, Ford had issues with the explorers (in which they blame Firestone.) GM has there ignition switch issue, Toyota had the accelerator pedal thing, its all up and down and all around.

and as for European cars, i don’t want too hear about how “perfect.” they are, i have experience with VW having tons of electric issues, and there is a reason Mercedes Benz and BMW are a fortune too fix i have had the displeasure of working on them, they break just like any other car its just the people who can afford too buy them (lets face it.) are the higher class richer people who buy a car, drive it maybe 100,000 miles and sell it for the newer model and someone gets the sloppy seconds, after that craps waiting too brake and YES it does, parts, a fortune, and labor a fortune too!

Not to stray too far from the original topic too far but In the case of VW it is true about the Mexican made ones being terrible. In fact if you look at 20+ year old models on the road still today most of them came out of Wolfsberg not Mexico.

Any electrical issue I’ve seen in a VW/Audi I’ve also seen in other cars. Its just one of a few things Domestic mechanics like to use for hate 🙂

When it comes to JDM vs Domestic quality I’d have to answer that with – Show me where the Domestic Quality is hiding.
