Loose brake pads

Ok … first post lets see if I can do this correctly and not make a fool of myself.

Every D.I.Y. or auto tech has a moment when they are in a hurry and rush a job. I am not going to say my qualifications. I’m not a little dog lol, anyways I performed a brake job on a 2008 PT cruiser.

      **replacement list**
      all 4 pads
      1 drum
      2 routers
      1 caliper

I did everything except one of the most important parts, bleed the brakes on the front left side (router, pad, and caliper replacement). Also I did not tighten the brake line down all the way. shot brake fluid all over the inner wheel weld … fun to clean up rrriigggghhhttt.

To make a long story short I cleaned up everything tightened down the brake line and then finished by bleeding the brakes. The problem at hand is the brakes feel great but I hear a clicking sound now if you take two brake pads and clap them together that is the sound I hear. I think it is one of two things.

      1. not getting all the air out of the line. wont say its not possible.

      2. the piston in the new caliper is shot.

Is this the right line of thinking? Is the caliper piston not securing the pad correctly or am I faced with another issue?

Did you use shims on the caliper you replaced? The pads should fit snugly in there… If they are not installed, the pads will be loose…

Shims where installed brakes came with new ones ( thank you champion ) Its not a up and down noise its hard to describe I know almost for a fact that the noise is the pads pressing against the router like the piston in the caliper is not moving with the brake wear.

My car is making the same noise. In my case the cause is a set of pads in back that are a little smaller than the originals. Brake pads come in sizes these days – do you want small, medium or extra large?

take the wheel off on the tire making the noise and do a visual check. Hope you can have someone press the brakes while you look at it. Just had a thought or do you mean you hear it when coming to a stop while moving. If it is while you are coming to a stop then check if there is the same noise when stopping while moving in reverse. let us know. I once had one the made a pop or clunk when stopping in reverse, tuned out to be on of the caliper bolts and caliper was pivoting on the other bolt.

It’s not likely the pads hitting the rotors. It’s more likely that as you apply the brakes, the pads are making noise when they make initial contact with the rotor and then rotate with rotor and then make contact with the caliper bracket. In short, the pads are loose in the caliper bracket and making noise when they’re applied. It’s quite common actually and I normally find that issue when either someone left the shims out of the caliper, or the brake pad bosses aren’t large enough to fill the void inside the caliper bracket. This is not a life threading situation, but it can be annoying. I normally start with a brake service.

If that doesn’t work I try a better set of pads. I also replace the caliper shims if they’re missing.

                    ****Update******

So I finally got the time to fix the issue and what had happened was the bottom clip was loose and had broke in half it was barely holding on so when i brake it would shove against the rotor. Replaced the clip and everything is good. Thank you to everyone.
