      Hello all,

it is a 2009 Toyota Yaris 5-speed. Car makes a whirring noise from gears 1-5. It is quiet when I throw it into neutral or have the clutch pedal disengaged (down). The moment I put it back into gear, the whirring noise comes back. The noise speeds up as the car speeds up. Also, when I let off the gas, still in gear, under load, the noise is still there but not as apparent as when I accelerate. Again, if I put it into neutral, even going as fast as 80 miles per hour, the whirring noise disappears, and when I put it back into gear at the same speed, the whirring noise happens again. (Only did that to test on an open road, I usually don’t drive like that). When the car is parked and in neutral, when I press in the clutch, there’s no noise. Car also shifts smoothly. I have no problems shifting from 1-5, down shifting, reversing, or turning.

Edit: I also want to mention the whirring noise is coming right under the front area. I have tried to let someone else drive it and listen in the back but it’s coming from the front for sure. Windows up, the noise is not so apparent or as loud. Windows down, you can hear it very strongly.

I have checked the axle, and it seems to have not much play, also doesn’t make any noise turning. Wheel bearing is also fine. I’m at the end of my wits, and it is driving me crazy. I could really appreciate any advice/ideas. Also, the transmission fluid has been changed recently, the old fluid was dark, but no visible metal shavings. Thank you so much.

Sounds like maybe a countershaft bearing on the way out. If that or something close is the case, the repair will be to rebuild or replace the transmission.

Just a guess but maybe the grease has dried out or lack of grease on one of the inner CV Joints.

I would think the noise should still be present with the car in neutral going 80mph if it was a CV.

i would say it is your throw out bearing. mine vehicle makes the same noise. no noise unless i am in gear and no noise with the clutched pressed in. mine also squeaks when i press the clutch in and out. check to see if yours squeaks with the engine off

I would think a bad throw out bearing would make noise when the clutch is disengaged (pedal pushed down). With the clutch pedal out, the bearings is only along for the ride. I’ve heard them rattle on the throw out lever before when the clutch is engaged ( foot off the pedal).

this would be my clutch then that is making the noise?

I’m thinking relitive4’s response is more blusubrosa’s problem. Far as a bad bearing in the throw out, the only time that spins is when the clutch is disengaged with the engine running. Squeaking when pushing the clutch pedal in & out with the engine off could be the pressure plate releasing I suppose or clutch linkage making the noise.

Did you experience the same noise before the transmission gear oil was changed?

If not, it could be a simple matter of too much or too little gear oil, or the wrong viscosity.
