I’m not sure. I asked a question at my intro to this site. Can I start my car knowing the timing is off, I guess because I cranked on my pulley bolt to make adj.. I will do a timing check of course. So on start up does the computer correct the ignition timing as to not bend valves and destroy my engine?

What type engine(Chain or belt)? and were cam and crank linked when turned crank?

was the timing belt installed when you rotated the crank? If not NO!!!! DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE.

These I am almost sure are interference engines and I would make sure the timing marks are aligned correctly before crank engine and if needed after setting the timing marks on crank and cam stab the dist since you will be at TDC #1

Yea everything was installed except valve cover to do the adjustment.

                  OK,wheew
The turn over to TDC #1 and check dist rotor pointing at #1 plug wire snug up dist bolt fire up and fine adj
Vale to piston collision can happen when cams and crank are allowed to move independently of each other, but if the cams and crank are linked they turn together(“valve timing”) and “Ignition timing”(distributor adjustment in your case) is when the plugs fire will allow run/no-run but not cause the type valve damage I think you are refuring to.

Ok, yes I didn’t touch anything else. So it seems my firing order will be off and the engine won’t start, unless I line it back up. I see that question all the time, “no start” . I have the # one piston set to TDC before I reinstalled cover, thankfully. Now to adjust spark to #1 and start up. I know the timing mark is not lined up in its current state. Will that come around when I start or should I bring that around and line that up too. Ie. Flywheel looking port. If I’m correct that should be my #1 cylinder at TDC or whatever the degree is supposed to be. Is this sounding right?

Pull #1 plug and push a piece of toilet paper(i use) in the plug tube turn crank until you see the paper blow that will mean you on the compression stroke, then take something(preferably soft but but firm) that is long and skinny (I use a screw driver but go slow and make sure it doesn’t get wedged in there. And turn crank till the driver starts to go back down(highest point is TDC). Now mark on crank should be at 0 degrees on the timing covers timing hash marks and dist rotor should be pointing at #1 plug dist cap contact.
That should allow start up and if so allow to run a few minutes to warm up and then final check your timing to adjust to spec.

Ok thank you. I’ll update later. That exhaust does not fit. Ruined my whole weekend. It was cheap so… There you go.
