      Hello
I purchased my 97 Subaru Outback just 3 months ago from a private party. All of a sudden, I don’t get any juice when I turn the key. NO click, no crank, no lights, no nothing except for a beeping when I have the door ajar… oh, and I can also use the electronic door locks. Other than that – no electrical. Took the battery and charged overnight, wire brushed the terminals and still nothing. Took the battery to a parts store and it checked out good.

Recently had computer replaced. Have also been running it without a thermostat because of a leak into the cooling system that would otherwise cause it to overheat. Please don’t tell me it’s the computer again!

Have you checked all of your fuses, and especially any BIG ones, like 40 or 50 amp fuses?

When you turn the key to run do the dash service lights come on…especially does the check engine light flash on (a dead computer will not flash the check engine light). If you get no lights though sounds like it may be something else.

Check all fuses (especially the big ones) and battery grounds…

Keep us informed on what you find…

Could be your starter, I vote you remove it and take it to the parts store to have it tested.

I’m not sure how to check the fuses that are in the fuse box under the hood but I see that a few of them are rated at 45 amps. The others I’m not sure about because all that it shows is that they are 12 volt. Perhaps if I describe them, you can tell me how to check them.

They’re black, about an inch and one-half long and have four prongs. The 45 amp ones are red with a clear plastic top and the same length.

(Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, but it’s hard for me to find time to work on it because of my job.)

Okay, I’ve checked all the fuses from the two fuse boxes and they all checked out good (one under dash and one under hood). The black four prong devices that look like big fuses, I haven’t yet checked because after looking at some of the videos that you linked up for me, I believe that they must be relays – I’ll probably have to look at the relay video again to see how to check them.

Anyway, I’ve also removed the starter, brought it to the auto parts store to have it checked and it checked out good. Does anybody have any more suggestions? If not, I think my next step is to have it towed to a dealer. Thanks for the help!

No, I don’t get any lights on the dash.

I have never seen a bad ignition switch on a Subaru but it is a possibility.

I couldn’t find the diagram I wanted but I circled a fusible link on this diagram that could be the cause of your problem.
