No reverse, drives in neutral

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp and the car has park, but no reverse and it drives is N, D and manual 3, but not in 2 or 1. I keep seeing people talk about the shifter cable missing the circular piece but under the hood it has it and when I shift, the cable moves the piece on top of the transmission that should put it into each gear. Any ideas?

Are there any transmission codes????
Is the fluid level correct.
Any discoloration / burnt odor of the fluid?

One possible cause:
The transmission pressure control solenoid may fail causing erratic shifting. Partial dis-assembly of the transmission is necessary to replace a failed pressure control solenoid.

It moves… but is it lined up right? Sounds like transmission position sensor is wonkers or not adjusted. What is N, what is D, what is 3? When you drive you might be able to tell.
