Generic codes are P0*** codes, they apply the same to ALL makes and models sold in the US.
Manufacture specific codes are P1*** codes, their meaning varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.Generic codes are the minimum codes that are required by law for the onboard modules to store. Manufacturer codes are additional codes that assist in self diagnostics and standard diagnostics.
For example a P0300 is always a random/multiple cylinder misfire code

BTW there is a growing list of codes and their explanations here on the site. Just type your code into the search box and what we have will come up. In the case of manufacturer specific, there will be a listing of the manufacturers we have a listing for with the code you typed in.
