P0430 code????

ok my 1997 cougar 3.8 liter is throwing P0430 it runs n shifts great for being 15 years old

The code is for the ‘catalyst efficiency’ meaning the catalytic converter. BTW you can type OBDII codes into the search box at the top of this page to get that information. Knowing that there are I think 3 cats on that vehicle it’s a matter of finding out which one the code might be setting for, my preferred method of checking cats is with an inferred thermometer, I get the vehicle nice and hot and then take the temperature of the catalytic converter before and after, it should be 100

You will fail emissions testing in some states with that code also.
