I’ve been driving Hondas since 1989 and have had a good education from my Honda mechanics at 4-star import automotive in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They’ve changed their mind about a couple of things over the years but one of the things they have remained consistent about is parts which is the reason for my post. They always preached using Honda parts and filters.

The last two days I’ve heard a light scraping noise coming from the rear wheel area of our 2006 Accord as my wife has backed out of the garage. I’ll have a look at them tonight. The question is: when it comes to brake parts, do you recommend using Honda rotors, pads and calipers? Or, can I use parts from the nearest O’Reilly’s, AutoZone or NAPA store?

      Thanks, Wayne

Stay away from autozone. Napa I hear is good. O Reilly’s I don’t have around here.
You can use aftermarket pads and rotors as long as you buy quality stuff. wagner,
bendix, akebono pads use the ceramic stuff. Same with rotors. If it has a 1-2 year
warranty and is labeled premium rotor go for it.

Both Oreilly’s and NAPA are good. As mentioned, stay away from autozone.

For my Hondas, I buy Akebono ceramic brake pads. They’re expensive, but definitely worth the investment.

I’ve been using Centric 120 series rotors and Posi-Quiet pads on all the personal/family/friend cars for years now and I’m not looking back. Tire Rack is the best place to get them. I am partial to buying from Tire Rack though, just because I’ve had so many great buying experiences from them for over more than 10 years now.

It’s the aftermarket fluids especially that are what the Hondas really don’t like.

I’ve used the Akebono ceramic pads with Raybestos AT rotors on the rear of an “Euro” Accord. I have no complaints, noise, or pedal vibration after 2 years.

There’s something about rear brakes where they like to make noise in reverse. Check it out but it might be nothing.

Funny thing is I have been getting brake parts from Autozone with no problem. I do get their top of the line pads not the 20.00 dollar pads. They come with the hardware kit. My daily driver is now 19 years old and I have had it since new. I am still running the original rotors. I have not had any ill effects. I have no problem with O’Reilly’s, AutoZone, napa, or even Pep Boys. When you get the pads just also get the hardware kit with them. I hope no one thinks I am trying to contridict them just sharing my experience. take it easy and good luck.

I had similar noise and found it was a chunk of dirt.

For brakes I personally think that sticking with the OEM is best if they are still on the vehicle. Check the pistons for corosion and the seals, clean and relube the slide pins. Quality pads are worth the money. Cheap pads may stop the car but they are going to chatter and squeal like a car full of preschoolers.

I’ve been using AutoZone and O’Reillys mostly since they first opened up around here in the very early 90s.
There’s never been an issue with any brake parts ever purchased from either of them and there’s been a lot of it over a wide range of vehicles.

If you are in the US and can wait up to a week though they normally arrive in 3-4 days http://www.rockauto.com/ is where I would get them from. I am a big fan of Raybestos and Bendix. I have used Monroe with no issues in the past and that was my dads backup brand he prefers Raybestos. Bendix makes car stuff but, It is mainly known in the Big Rig and Trucking industry and they make very good stuff as well. All 3 brands I listed above make rotors but, I prefer Raybestos and Bendix for those. Also I only by the professional kits, because it comes with all the hardware ie squeal clips, sometimes brake grease, and they normally fit a lot nicer and last longer.

I don’t care what car I own I always use semi metallic pads and I replace the rotors once they get too chewed up which is normally every other pad change. But, the newer cars some of them can be noisy with semi metallic, etc. I bed mine in right after they are changed and I have never had an issue.

You get what you pay for and for brakes I will always pay a premium for those brands because well i like to stop when i need too.
