evidence of a leaking valve cover was made clear when i re-gapped my plugs.

next year i will replace the valve cover gasket on my daewoo as it dont seem too difficult just seems to require removing 6-8 nuts but i have a few questions.

      1) do i need to remove the plugs to get the valve cover off?
      2) how do i get all the caked on oil cleaned off? ive tried throttle cleaner dont even seem to losen it up to wipe off.
      3) should i try to tighten the valve cover bolts before i do anything?
      4) should i try dumping some STP oil stop leak into the car?

shouldnt be too hard to replace the gasket but im looking for alternatives in case napa or autozone dont have a gasket.

They will have a gasket. The better gasket kits include ALL the rubber parts, not just the main gasket, but also any rubber hole plugs and rubber grommets for the bolt holes.

It’s not strictly necessary to clean everything up, but some of us do, it helps in finding the leaks later on. It’s sooo important to not stretch the gasket so it has lumps or bumps.

The plugs can stay in.Plugs wires come out. Try using
carb spray to clean up the gunk. No stop leak.

            Exactly what college man said.

I strongly agree NO to stop leak. Most oil stop leaks work by softening the rubber that seals are made from. This causes them to swell and seal up….temporarily. Soft seals wear much faster so by sticking stop leak into your car you might stop the valve cover leak, but in the process be setting yourself up to need to replace the cam and crank seals (big job).

well there is also cork gaskets plastic gaskets and paper gaskets theres also gasket sealer. or if i want to, just because i have a couple cans, i can just use some Flex Seal spray it on the valve cover and tighten it down

EDIT: Another option would be just to drain the oil and dump in some 10w30 since it seems impossible to get 5w40 for a decent price

Well i have no idea how long its been leaking the shop says its common to start leaking at 15k miles i have no idea if it started then but its had oil build up since ive been driving it. Funny thing is it dont use oil. You would think a leaking valve cover would make it where oil needs to be added often. It dont leak enough where it leave puddles or gets on the exhaust and burns away
