Starts than don’t starts?

95 ford explorer 4.0 motor starts than sometimes don’t start.When it don’t start don’t hear fuel pump. check fuse and relay all good.I my self have not checked it my cousin said he checked it. I will check it myself tomorrow.

It can be either the relay or the fuel pump. next time it doesnt start, have someone crank it and you crawl under the car and hit the gas tank few time to try to “knock” the fuel pump into turning on. If it starts, then you probably need a fuel pump.

ok checked the 95 ford explorer today. checked fuel pump relay checked good checked fuel pump fuse checked good. check wiring good. just for the hell of it pulled the pcm relay and put in a known good one and heard fuel pump come on and it started right up. but than i put the old relay in and it started up too is that funny or what any ideas?

I still stand by my theory. The fuel pump must have a few burnt up contact points. Once in a while it will stop on those bad contacts and when it wants to crank over again, its stuck. It works like a starter motor. Next time it doesnt want to start, hit the gas tank, if it helps it, its the fuel pump.

Before my cousin would drive it around park it would not start than leave it sit than it would start but now since i replaced the PCM relay it starts every time.when it would not start there was no power to the fuel pump and no power to the ign coils no spark.

I sometimes do this and it works. While it’s not starting I’ll bang on the bottom of the fuel tank, a rubber mallet would work well for this, if the engine starts I replace the fuel pump.

Well I tested the PCM relay and sometime it would click and sometimes it would not and ohm it out too and it did not check out good. since replace the PCM relay all is good so far.
