I had to replace the sway bar on my Nissan, its actually not that difficult and you should be fine and dropping the subframe and the steering gear is not necessary, but it does make it a lot easier to remove the sway bar. I didn’t have to do drop anything i just slid it out the way it is but probably for your vehicle you might have to and also be sure to use penetrating oil, it will make removing it much easier. I would also recommend not getting a hollow sway bar because it will break again.

I’ve done work on older Grand ams, this video might help.

Not sure about replacing the bar with the subframe in the car however. Keep us posted on your progress.

It’s possible to replace the bar with the subframe still bolted in place, but it’s time-consuming and -for me at least- frustrating. The last one I did I lowered the subframe a couple of inches for some extra wiggle room, but I’ve worked with some people who have done it without lowering the subframe. It also depends on how the tolerances stacked up when the car was being built at the factory, since all of them will be ever-so-slightly different, even if they are built by robots.

What I mean by tolerances, to use a Ford Focus as an example, some of them I can remove the alternator through the bottom by just bending a heat-shield and giving a good tug. Others, I need to bend a heat shield, unbolt the steering rack and shove it toward the read of the car and then give a good tug.

Hey Eric sorry for the delayed response. I ordered the sway bar with the end links so I expect it, no later than tuesday. It is a solid 33mm bar. Not sure if I want to do the work myself at this point. Given the video I watched of you, I’m thinking it might be a bit more than I can chew. I’m assuming Grand Ams and Grand Prix share the same setup.

I think they’re roughly the same set up if not exactly the same. If you have a way to support the engine so you can drop the subframe I think this would be your best option. You may also need heat to remove rusted exhaust bolts should you have to drop the exhaust to get the new bar in place. Good luck.
