ive also been told that if your car sits for long periods of time (like a classic that doesnt get driven but on really nice weekends during the summer) that synthetics are more forgiving to storage too.
There are lots of differing opinions here. For what mine is worth, I would always choose the best oil I can get on offer, a change it every 5,000 miles. It cost me about £25 to put castrol magnatec and a good quality filter on mine and my girlfriends cars. So whats that $78 a year per car. Some people might think this a lot, but lets face it there isn’t one of us that hasn’t bought lunch out, or bought that shirt we wanted but didn’t really need.
You don’t expect your house to burn down, but would you run the risk of failing to insure it in the hope it didn’t? I know from experience, your glad you insured your house when it does! That’s not to say the other opinions aren’t valid, because everyone’s opinion is exactly that, an opinion. But it makes me feel safer to do the best I can for my car without costing me a fortune. Shopping around or waiting for the sale can mean the difference between a top notch synthetic and a own brand regular oil.
Now what are the brands that are called synthetic but are actually a blend because of a loophole? Is Mobile 1 really full synthetic?
i think because of a court case, anything labeled full synthetic is fully sytnthetic oil. major brands such as catrol and valvoline and quaker state sell semi synthetic or synthetic blended oil. penzoil does too, but i was taught by my grandfather (a master mechanic for over 50 years) to never use penzoil, not even in a lawnmower. you can usually tell the difference by bottle color, silver is often the blend gold the full, or the prices, semi will be somewhere halfway between standard motor oil and full synthetics.
i’d like info and opinions on those new bio oils. biodegradable and all that. does it mean i can just dump it in the ditch across from my house? (thats a joke btw) also what about green recycled oil?

It prob depends on the actual oil there may be some mobile 1s which are pure synthetic but most are PAO blended oils
examples of pure synthetics = motul 300v (ester), redline (ester), royal purple (PAO), amsoil (PAO), penrite 10-10ths (aussie – ester+PAO)
So Mobile 1 isn’t a pure synthetic? (hhmmm..I hate it when a company bs’s me.) Is there a way to tell on the bottle? Group III’s or some such? …and what is the real deal?

mobile 1 is NOT 100% man-made. it is a PAO blend (group 4). mobile 1 is still good. unless you track your car regularly there is no point in getting a pure group 4/5 oil
With regards to oil grades look for the German manufacturers approvals, Mercedes,VW, BMW & Porshe on the back of the oil container.
As a rule of thumb these guys are really strict about oil quality so if it has their endorsement you can’t go wrong.
(you’ll be surprised how many top end oil Brands don’t)When it comes to oil i have always tried to use the best i can afford & have always looked into the technical specs of the oil as some “premium/well known” brands are no where near as good as the smaller less known producers… I currently use Millers CFS 10w40 Fully Synth it costs about £55 for 5L… But i do go on track days (not certain if you can get that over there) but Motul 300V is a good oil from what i’ve read. It really does depend on application & personal budget. Interms of Mobil 1 they are the same as most oil companies & produce some semi & some fully synth.
