Alright. So I has a 1973 Ford F250 Ranger XLT, Camper Special, 390. The previous owner added a carb spacer, 600 cfm Edelbrock 4bbl, and headers with a dual exhaust. I’ve re curved the distributor and added a free flowing air cleaner.

So I’ve owned it for about 7 months now and I have completely redone the interior on it. Now that the interior is done, now comes for the outside. Well I don’t have a lot more money, but I want a black exterior. So without further adue, here is the Chronicles of the 55 dollar paint job.

I am going to attempt to cheat as little as possible. I do still have a bit of masking tape from a previous project, as well as some sanding blocks and other random supplies, but no paint whatsoever.
Now this will be a step by step guide more or less so it shall be fun to go through. I am working in a driveway and am not able to separate the bed, so that ought to be funs.

The starting point

This was my 73 the day right after I bought it. I gave her a good wash and took pictures. Some chrome was in the bed, tailgate hinges missing, just tons of things wrong. But hey she was $500 bucks. The search for a name started.

The next visual upgrade

So during a lull in my interior work I moved on to stage 1 of exterior makeover. I sanded down the wheels and shot them with black. I was also in the process of removing the chrome support tabs (sold off the chrome to feed the stereo addiction). This is more of less how she (Betsy) sits right at this moment.

The monies as of 7/4/2013 @ 2:18

This is the 55 I have left over from a trip. This ought to be interesting to keep in budget the whole time. In no way am I nervous, it will just be exciting. Any help would be appreciated or just subscribe to this and sit back and watch the fun.

To help you with coverage. You need to sweep your can and start spraying AFTER your motion is started. When you stop and start going back to the other direction, you need to stop spraying and let your motion start the other way before you start spraying again. You can see these darker dots spots on your paint, which is build up.

Your second coat should have more coverage or ‘more’ wet than what you’re spraying.

Would be ideal if you can spray along the entire bed side in one motion rather than 1 foot sections.

Whoops the first and second picture are the same. And thank you on the coverage. I was having some issues with the cans, but since it has a matte finish I was not too worried about it. It ended up being a real good coverage, and looks good until you get about 3 foot from it.

Little more expensive, but would last longer is Plasti-dip!

I did my wheels and bumpers with it. Good thing about it is it does dry so matte and you can not tell any mistakes. It’s very unifom. AND IT COMES OFF when you want it off. Just peel it off..

Well I’m out of paint. Darnit. Anyways. My friend came over last night and refered to this as “Darth Vaders Truck in the back”. I think it has a cool old school feel starting. And honestly, if I wanted total durability I could have just done bed liner all over the truck.

So here is the passenger side

At this point I started running out of paint. Urg. Anyways I got half way through with the cab before my remaining cans fell with their brethren.

Looks good and good job on the budget paint job.

And I would not have any issues using rattlecans to paint a car. I fixed a few dings and scratches on my old car that way, ie filling out the dents with filler, sanding it down, clean, primer, wet sand, final coat, clean, and then top coat. It looked more or less showroom fresh on that part 🙂

And I know of several people who has painted entire vehicles with rattlecans and gotten decent and satisfying results out of it 🙂

I’ll say, it can be done, old roommate did it to his car, using thinned rustoleum and a foam roller, looks pretty sweet considering. Only issues I see, prep work in some cases is showing through after a years time, and slight orange peel texture.

Good luck

I’m not sure if you will be able to get a good finish outdoors. The wind tends to mess up the spray pattern. More, loads of bugs from all the place over will stick to your paint. One way though is to use the paint pad method… not perfect but does get the job done. It depends how far you want to take it.
Jane 😉

hey everybody, been away from the computer for a while. So here is the story. There has been rain, rain, rain, rain and more rain recently. While the whole truck is now black, there was a bit of damage (the first day it just rained hard). So Tuesday will be the final coat and fixing some of the whoopsys that were done.

Four weeks, 7 hours later and she is finished. I used 30 cans of spray paint (28.80), Two rolls of tape (7) and two cans of clear (8). SOOOO in total 43 dollars later I got this

Nice!

Ive also seen online people using Rust-oleum too and applying it with rollers. Pretty interesting.

Looks good man, believe it or not I sprayed this from the good ole rattle cans right in my shop! This was about a week project along with the graphics “which was my first time doing,EVER!” Practice makes perfect, the pain I used was krylon dual-paint+primer satin black and blue. The owner bought 4wd fenders and bed, pathfinder wheels and tinted the windows.

i’m with HR…. Should have rolled it with Rusto by the gallon for 25 bucks and had leftovers….But the best low budget ya coulda pulled off would be acrylic enamel….jus sayin.

My preference is urethane

She’s a bute and looks how I wanted. She still retains the sleeper type vibe, only without looking so freakin stock. The thing is with the roller method is that it had to sit out in the rain. I cant just pull her into the garage and spray cans seemed like the easiest way to do it. If i had a spray gun and a compressor that was worth a damn, i wouldnt have given a second thought to using actual paint. Granted she isnt the prettiest thing people have ever seen, but boy does she still get looks.
