Timing marks question

I just started a timing belt job on my cousins Integra and the timing marks on the crank don’t line up with the mark on the timing cover. The cams are fine, but the mark on the timing cover is between the white TDC mark and the ignition timing marks. It’s actually closer to the ignition timing marks than TDC. Should I rotate the crank till it lines up and then just proceed with the job, or should I just leave it alone? And if I do have to move the crank, will I need to reset the ignition timing?

Makes perfect sense. I am the same way, I am for right now book smart. I have the theory down, but need that all powerfull wrench time/experiance to help guide me. That’s why I am spending at least an hour a day on the forum to learn from the experianced techs and when I get my car in a few weeks I can start practicing. I am in the same boat as you man, little experiance, a lot of book smarts.

I didn’t take offense to your comments at all, I hope you didn’t with mine either. A miss at idle SCREAMS vacuum leak. You might want to check for some at the intake gasket. The fact that the valves were so far out is also suspect. Make sure you were checking them correctly. BTW it’s not common practice to set the valve lash at the machine shop, that’s something you would do after you got the head back on the engine. You might want to go back and check your adjustments, you could be off.

You know, I didn’t even think to check a vacuum leak because I didn’t get a lean code. See, that’s one of those rookie mistakes I make sometimes. I need to stop relying on the scan tool. I tripled and quadruple checked the valve adjustment. I’ve been watching your valve adjustment videos since the first one you put out so I knew they shouldn’t be that far out but being I didn’t work on the head I figured whoever did either forgot or used the wrong size feeler gauges. Being I was doing the timing belt and water pump I figured I would just do it. I’m going to check them again though just in case. Thanks for your response to my topic. I’ll open up a new topic being the timing marks issue is solved. Thanks again Eric.

You’re most welcome. Always keep this in mind when diagnosing something, K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. Don’t overcomplicate things. Most issues have simple solutions. I’ll keep an eye out for the other thread.
