I have a 2002 Toyota Sienna with approximately 210,000 kms and when I went to put the van from park to drive, the car did not move. I cycled through all the gears including reverse as well, but still the car did not move. I am wondering if this is a problem with the transmission, I do not know the previous maintenance record or when/if the transmission fluid was changed because I bought it used. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Well one – check the fluid level. Not sure if the engine needs to be running or not. Investigate that.

If you do see fluid, does it look reddish or brown/blackish? Reddish is good.

With the engine off but the key in the ignition, run through the gears and see if the selector moves on the trans. That lever might be hard to locate.

Maybe inspect the wiring best you can.

So after that check, when you put it in gear and rev the engine a little (maybe 1500 to 2000 rpm), does it try to move? If it barely moves or “catches” pretty hard or if it takes a few seconds to engage, you have serious trans problems.
