      Hey Eric, and ETCG fans.

I have a suggestion for you Eric for a video. Maybe it would be more of a ETCG1 video.

      Topic: Over Filling your oil

I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Case in point: I took my 2008 Ridgeline to the dealer for an oil change. I noticed on the bill they charged me for 5L of oil. Having done the OC on this vehicle before I know it holds 4.5L (ish), I believe that is with the filter…. J series 3.5.

PERSONALLY I think that it should be fine. A friend that was looking under the hood with me said I should drain it out. Personally I don’t think its going to be a problem as it was only 1-2mm up over the full mark.

I know grossly over filling your oil is very bad for the engine and you will start to blow out seals and what not… but half a litre?

I searched the internet for answers and as usual, I get a lot of mixed answers. People saying a little but wont hurt, some saying GET IT OUT NOW OMG END OF THE WORLD type stuff.

… but I’d really like to hear your opinion on the subject Eric!

      Thanks for reading.

Interesting topic. It covers quite a bit. On one hand, the shop does not charge you for 4.5L of oil, they’ll charge you for 5.0, just because the paperwork is easier, and it works in their favor in the end obviously. That’s not to say that the tech that did the oil change didn’t put in whatever. Depends on their level of dedication to their job and what kind of day they were having. The things I’ve seen my coworkers do would probably make it so you never took your vehicle in for service ever again. So with that point of view, it’s really about what you get when you get your vehicle serviced.

On the other hand there is the mechanical aspect of actually overfilling a crank case or some other system.

Honestly I’m not sure where to go with this at this time. Let me noodle it around for a bit and see if I can come up with anything.

        Thanks for your suggestion.

Woa! Thanks for the speedy reply. I like where you’re going with that. I know that most shops will charge you for the litre if they use it or not…. There fore they can just keep the half a litre and use it in someone else’s car… And then charge THAT person for another litre. This is all I theory of course, I’ve never worked in a shop.

I thought it was a pretty good topic, the mechanical aspect has come up in my group of friends/family many times.
